“De bron is de Jaarrapportage Wet Afbreking zwangerschap. Maar de grafiek daarin toont juist een scherpe daling vanaf de achtste ‘zwangerschapsweek’. Dat is dus vanaf de vierde week na de eerste uitgebleven menstruatie.

“De enige stijging zit in de allervroegste periode, en die is bovendien slechts schijn. Sinds enkele jaren is er namelijk een test op de markt die ruim een week na een bevruchting al kan aantonen dat deze plaatsgevonden heeft. Dat is al vóórdat de bevruchte eicel volledig is ingenesteld, en zelfs voor de eerste uitgebleven menstruatie!

“En nu zijn we op dat moment al van ‘zwangerschap’ gaan spreken en daarmee van een ‘abortus’.”

Het is dus een definitiekwestie.

“Ja. De fabrikant van deze Clearblue ultravroeg test heeft deze ‘zwangerschapstest’ gedoopt in plaats van bijvoorbeeld ‘bevruchtingstest’, waarmee hij de betekenis van het woord ‘zwangerschap’ ongemerkt heeft uitgebreid. Tot voor kort kon je zo vroeg nog helemaal niet zwanger heten.

In uw Mandeville lezing bekritiseert u het Europese
vluchtelingenbeleid. Wat is uw belangrijkste
boodschap?
‘Juist nu grote aantallen mensen bescherming zoeken, moet
Europa zijn eigen standaarden toepassen en die niet verloo-
chenen. Het joint statement van de Global Migration Group
over “Human rights of migrants in an irregular situation” van
2010 was een belangrijk moment. Daarin uitten VN-organen en
andere organisaties niet alleen hun zorgen over de kwetsbare
positie van illegale migranten. Ze zeiden in feite ook: “wij
staan voor de mensenrechtelijke normen die in Europa zijn
ontwikkeld en die Europa naleeft.”
Europa heeft met zijn lange traditie van beschermen van
mensenrechten een voorbeeldfunctie. Wij riepen overheden
overal ter wereld op om naar die Europese standaard te streven.
Daarom is het alarmerend dat nu in Europa een aantal kern-
waarden met voeten worden getreden. Andere landen zien dat
Europa het opeens niet meer zo nauw neemt met de normen
die het zelf heeft bepaald.
Het is belangrijk om Europeanen eraan te herinneren waar
zij vandaan komen. Waarom verdiende de Europese Unie in
2012 de Nobelprijs voor de Vrede? Tegen deze achtergrond
en kijkend naar de miljoenen Syriërs die hun land hebben
moeten ontvluchten, van wie veruit de meesten nu in buur-
landen als Libanon bivakkeren, valt het moeilijk te begrijpen

Het is zeer teleurstellend dat sommige landen denken in
termen van quota. Op die manier kunnen zij niet voldoen
aan de verplichting die de kern vormt van het asielrecht,
het bieden van bescherming aan vluchtelingen. Ook de
EU-Turkije deal druist in tegen kernbepalingen van het
VN-Vluchtelingenverdrag. Je screent mensen om te beoordelen
of ze asiel en bescherming nodig hebben, niet om ze terug te
sturen. Dat moet een individuele beoordeling zijn, ongeacht
de aantallen. Daar komt nog bij de zeer gebrekkige toegang tot
recht, inclusief rechtshulp, voor asielzoekers die in het zuiden
van Europa aankomen.
Dit laat opnieuw zien dat rechtshulpverleners en NGO’s in
actie moeten komen om schendingen van mensenrechten aan
te kaarten. Dat zie ik als de belangrijkste taak voor het maat-
schappelijk middenveld: verzamel de feiten.”

ICE appears to be using the parking lot of the Roxbury warehouse for processing and brief detention, and at least once appears to have taken people inside. But also, read this inside look from a federal contractor about how everyone knew the warehouse plan was insane but Miller demanded inhumanity.

NPR spoke to an official at a government contractor whose company was approached to convert several of the warehouses into ICE facilities. He spoke on the condition of anonymity for fear of retaliation from the government.

"No one that we spoke to at DHS was for this idea whatsoever. The deputy director told us point-blank that they had pushed back very hard on it. Everybody knew warehouses are horrible places to put people," he says.

At a meeting with a deputy director at DHS, he says, his company proposed an alternative: FEMA-style camps in Texas that would be more humane.

He says that idea was swiftly shot down. While White House adviser Stephen Miller was not at the meeting, they were told that this was not what Miller wanted.

The contractor says his understanding from that meeting was that "Miller did not want the facilities that were comfortable. He did not want facilities that were humane. We were told point-blank that that was not what the administration wanted."

"Steve Miller certainly seemed to make that point to everyone that he wanted it to be cruel. This was what Miller had stated to the DHS at that time, to the DHS director and deputy director. What surprised me was just how adamant the people were that it was going to happen. Damn the consequences. I would say in 25 years of working with the U.S. government, I've never been in that position before."
