I went to a salsa dancing class tonight. At one point they had us keep switching partners and I ended up with my 8th grade student. Is he going to have nightmares tonight? Is this the most horrifying thing he’s ever experienced? Middle school kids are usually horrified to even see me in public.

The brewery book club chose a book for this month that leans heavily towards “breasted boobily.” I can’t decide if I should skip this month or hate read it and then say what I really think. Chapter 2 and a woman walked with her “breasts chugging.” That wasn’t the first hard eye roll of the book.

I was getting passport pictures done and 1- when they told my 13 yo he couldn’t smile he kept getting the giggles and it took about 12 tries and 2- the elderly lady renewing her license next to us got mad when she found out they didn’t need a new picture. “You mean I put on makeup for NOTHING?”

I saw Bela Fleck, Edmar Castañeda, and Antonio Sánchez perform last night. The concert was amazing. Bela Fleck talked about one of his music teachers who influenced him the most and he was in the audience.

I had a former student in as a guest artist today! My band kids composed incidental music for Shakespeare scenes. She’s a director for a local Shake. Company, and she coached them on the dialogue. I started teaching her when she was 10 and it’s so much fun to have her back as an adult.

My local library was giving out free seeds today and it was packed. One of the librarians was looking around, amazed, saying that she couldn’t believe how many people were there. It was great. You could get 10 packages of seeds with your library card, and they had veggies, herbs, and flowers.

Teaching can be hard, almost always because of adults, but I had an interaction today with one of my students who’s nonverbal that melted my heart and made me so grateful for my career choice. People who are nonverbal can communicate so beautifully if you really pay attention.

I took my kids to an aquarium yesterday. It was about 15 degrees and windy. When we found out that the penguin exhibit was outside I got concerned that penguins would be outside in this weather, so I guess the week between Christmas and New Year dissolved my brain, as nature intended.
