I usually think prom-posals are ridiculous, but before our pep band thing tonight one of my sweetest students had a big bouquet, a 10 Things I Hate About You sign, and got the rest of the band to scream-sing Can’t Take My Eyes Off of You to ask another band kid to homecoming and it was adorable.

I think there can be a big disconnect between people doing research and teachers who are working with real kids every day. I think they have at least as much to learn from us as we do from them. Also, if they want to know what we need to do better work, maybe ask us?

I went to a salsa dancing class tonight. At one point they had us keep switching partners and I ended up with my 8th grade student. Is he going to have nightmares tonight? Is this the most horrifying thing he’s ever experienced? Middle school kids are usually horrified to even see me in public.

Yes! Making yourself a really nice dinner makes things a little better. Bonus if you can have a long phone call with a good friend. The nights I made myself a fancy dinner right after my divorce the days my kids were with their dad and I was a little lost helped.

I had to sit through AI training today led by someone who A- didn’t seem to understand that AI generated text and art are stolen and B- thinks K-12 teachers should use it to plan lessons. I thought my head was going to explode.

I know someone who experienced something very similar at the same school in the 90s and absolutely nothing happened to the rapists. The complete lack of consequences over generations seems like the school is condoning and pretty much encouraging it.

Pay attention to what does or doesn’t come your way. At my lowest, opportunities dried up and I couldn’t have handled them anyway. When I barely started to come up for air, big and small things started coming my way and I had to resist the urge to reflexively say no.

I’m horrified that it’s being pushed hard in K12. When I suggested in a required training that we needed to back up and discuss if kids should use it before we skipped to how to use it more I was reprimanded and told to be respectful and trust the process.

MIT has been pushing AI into public K12 schools. I’ve been required to sit through some of their trainings. The fact that they’re MIT makes administrators not question them and not let us question them, either.

Out school banned cell phones during school hours last year and it’s been fantastic. Nothing complicated, just “if we see it we take it” (with obvious exceptions for the kids who need it for medical reasons.)

Isn’t this organization’s whole thing based on contempt for experienced teachers? The idea that a 6 week program is enough to get 22 year olds ready to show veteran teachers how it’s done has always been pretty offensive.
