Excited to see such strong signals from Burnham & EU leaders about a path to Britain rejoining EU. But god, why are Labour SO BAD at messaging? “We’ll consult a bunch of think tanks, conduct endless polls, stick our fingers in the wind…” Fucking stand for something!

Years of attacks on the humanities have made humanities professors especially susceptible to the “don’t be left behind“ nonsense, I think - also seemingly unable to robustly defend their skills and the value of their work.

I really struggle with how to respond when an otherwise smart writer refers to “cancel culture” without quotation marks. It feels nitpicky to call it out, but also important not to normalize bullshit!

Jo & I finally watched L'Important C'est d'Aimer, the neo-giallo classic starring Romy Schneider, Fabio Testi & Klaus Kinski, that was shot partly in our apartment. It's such a sexy, trashy gem. This might count as self-doxxing, if we weren't moving out this weekend after 3½ years.

I know this is not the biggest concern going these days, but it stresses me out that basically every artist/writer/critic is now expected to create their own tiny empire instead of getting paid by any existing entity to perform a job they've worked to get good at!!!!

Photos of newly arrived immigrants at Ellis Island. Augustus Sherman took the photos between 1902 and 1920 when he worked as the Chief Registry Clerk. Striking to me how the outfits all look good because they have a discernible silhouette (shape and drape).
Two photo. The first is of a Romanian piper; the second is of three Georgians who were employees of the "Buffalo Bill Wild West Show."
Two photos. The first is of a Romanian shepherd. The second is of an Algerian man.Two photos. The first is of a Ruthenian woman. The second is of a Guadeloupean woman (apparently actually en route to Montreal, Canada). Two photos. The first is of a Greek soldier. The second is of an Indian boy.

In general, the focus on what professors do in the classroom is wrong. The focus should be on how the administrators run schools. Administrations hiring more fulltime faculty and reducing class sizes would go much farther to addressing the problem than any ideas about "engaging assignments"

All of these things--casualization of academic labor, censorship, the insistence that academic research of any kind can be done by AI--are part of a longer project of devaluing academic work, especially in the humanities. You only work this hard to DEvalue something if it's valuable--and a threat.
