I hear that. I've used name generators before. One thing I've done that helps immensely for me--no primary or secondary characters share the same starting letter/sound. For me it really helps keep names straight.

If a character is supposed to be very smart and strategic, I have to be smart and strategic. And look, some things are difficult to fake! Also, flirting. If characters are supposed to flirt it, um, ends up being more awkward than anything! #WeeknightWriters
