A person with light hair is sitting, wearing a dark jacket and glasses on top of their head. They appear to be speaking or gesturing. Text on the image memorializes Helen Branswell, mentioning their work in reporting on infectious diseases and public health, and noting their passing at age 69.

Haven't seen a Blue Jay in about a week. Decided to put out the bird feeders since it's fall. I filled the peanut wreath, turned around to close the shed door, turned back and ---- BAM 🤣😂. How do they know??! 😂 #birds
Blue and grey and black bird with a blue crest is gripping a green metal peanut wreath style feeder. Bird has a big peanut in its beak and looks very pleased with itself.

While Elvis Presley has had many reimaginings in popular culture, Japanese noh theater might be a most unexpected context. Nonetheless, his ghost is coming to the stage in Tokyo on Oct. 10 and 11.

I rarely see Tennessee Warblers in the Spring but happily see quite a few of them in the Fall. Most of them fly across the Gulf of Mexico to get to their wintering grounds. Safe travel little birdies!

A Gray Catbird shaking out the wings in the rain. There must have been a nest nearby as I've spotted juveniles and heard many of their signature mew calls from the berry bushes.

This female Pileated Woodpecker was hammering away on a tree when a Sharp-shinned Hawk landed nearby, followed by the hawk being promptly dive-bombed by Blue Jays. After the hawk left, the Pileated decided to head out for a different, and probably quieter, tree.

A Sandhill Crane on the watch on a rainy day, with a touch of the first signs of Fall color. A colt (who is almost adult-size) was nearby, so this parent was making sure no nonsense gets too close.

An Osprey gives me a look while carrying a stick back to the nest. I saw an Osprey carrying a much bigger stick yesterday. Osprey will continually bring in sticks to the nest to fortify any weak spots, and to build a high rim to prevent nestlings from falling out of the nest.

A juvenile Virginia Rail stretches a wing. This bird is not flight ready yet; you can see a few of the feathers are still in their keratin sheath (those straw looking structures), which protects new feathers while they develop.

Things are quite cozy in the Great Blue Heron nests with some taking their first flights and others getting ready. In the second photo, the heron on the right takes a wing to the beak due to the one on the left strengthening his/her wings with lots of flapping.

One of the first flights I've seen from the Great Blue Heron nestlings. I can tell this is a young one due to the brown in the neck feathers (adults have gray without the brown.)
