I'm so excited to present at Cal-TASH for the first time! Can't wait to be in the company of so many disability justice advocates. I'm especially excited for the Crip Camp watch party and closing keynote!! I would love to connect with anyone else who will be there!

Q8: What would classrooms look like if we fully lived the belief that math belongs to everyone?

A7: Sometimes students with disabilities really exist on the margins of math class, pulled out and given cold, clinical worksheets to help "fill gaps" instead of being allowed to do rich meaningful tasks. Viewing math as a human right would mean understanding that students with disabilities ALSO

A5: Math belonging means all students are celebrated and highlighted for their brilliance, which first means that we as teachers take the time to ensure we are looking at all students in ways that lets their understanding show. We can't be looking for the wrong things! #ElemMathChat

A4: Systemic denial of students' human right to math might look like not allowing students to engage in math that matters or that is joyful. Rote memorization as a students' sole math engagement. Math that doesn't build or connect. And it's our responsibility to push back #ElemMathChat

For those of you who make sure to have live captions when you are presenting - what's available out there besides the feature in Google slides? I learned yesterday that Google slides isn't very accent-friendly so looking for something that might be better. @mathematize4all.bsky.social #disability

Today, we honor the legacy of Judy Heumann, widely recognized as one of the founding leaders of the disability rights movement in the United States. She remained determined in her fight for disability justice, rights, and inclusion.
A quote from Judy Heumann in white text reads, “Change never happens at the pace we think it should.” Behind the text is a photo of Judy at a Meeting of the Presidents’ Council on Disability Inclusion.

Okay, I cannot recommend 5calls.org enough. Enter your address and it will find all your reps (federal and state). AND give you a list of issues to call about AND which reps to call about each of them AND a little script for each, in case it's helpful. They have an app, too.

Has anyone started doing presentations in Canva? Did you know they have a feature that will check the #accessibility of your slides? Just go File > Accessibility and you can check your graphics and layouts for accessibility. It will even remind you about writing alt text for images and videos!

Thoughts after a long week in classrooms - a big old thread. All of my teaching career I spent in inclusive settings. I have been in schools where full inclusion worked beautifully. I believe in it fully. I believe that all students deserve the same opportunity to be in community together.
