Our new paper asks the question: is there any precedent for recent, high-severity fires that have removed >100,000 acres of forests from northern New Mexico? Based on the locations of trees that recorded surface fires over the prior 500 years, the answer is, statistically speaking, "not a chance".

Hey folks I am recruiting for a phd position in tree thermal physiology. 🌐🌾🧪 Ad below. Applications due Dec. 1st www.unlv.edu/graduatecoll...
1)	PhD in tree thermal physiology to investigate the impacts of heat extremes on tree performance and survival. The PhD student would pursue independent research to identify the thermal limits to tree survival in natural forests and urban canopies. A major focus of the position is on studies using thermal cameras, field sampling of plant stress through metrics like water potential, and monitoring of tree mortality. The student would also have the opportunity to develop their own research questions and participate in the Southwest Climate Adaptation Center (SWCASC, https://www.swcasc.arizona.edu/about/overview).

Required qualifications:
•	BS or MS in a related field (env sci, ecology, statistics, forestry, biology, etc.)
•	Some knowledge of plant physiology
Preferred qualifications:
•	Comfortable working in R
•	Ecophys experience (e.g., water potential, gas exchange)
•	Experience with thermal imagery
•	Scientific writing experience

Applications due Dec. 1st through UNLV Graduate College:
https://www.unlv.edu/graduatecollege/apply Candidates can email Drew.Peltier@unlv.edu describing their interests in the position and relevant experience, including a CV. However: I am unable to assess candidate suitability before students have formally applied through the UNLV Graduate College.

Dioecious plants have separate male and female individuals, and temperature sensitivity may vary between sexes. A study of a dioecious grass species, Texas Bluegrass, shows that poleward shifts will be shaped by male heat intolerance. In PNAS: www.pnas.org/doi/full/10....
Geographic projections of population viability predicted by the female-dominant and two-sex models. Maps show past, current, and future range shifts based on the predicted probabilities of self-sustaining populations. The last panel shows the difference in geographic projections of population viability between the female-dominant model and the two-sex model for each season.
