I dunno man, maybe you could concentrate on producing good and interesting things people want to watch rather than trying to out-banal the lowest common denominator crap hosed at us everywhere else? (And make using BBC Sounds a less excruciating experience?) deadline.com/2026/10/bbc-...

I heard Englishness defined as 'people who have been here for centuries' on Radio 4 this morning, and it went completely unchallenged

What everyone forgets about the introduction of student fees is that they were supposed to be on a tier system, with the top fee charged only by the 'best' providers. But everyone immediately went to the top and got stuck there... So the competition element of the system *immediately* failed.
Wikipedia: Tuition fees were a major concern at the 2010 general election. The Liberal Democrats entered the election on a pledge to abolish tuition fees, but had already made preparations to abandon the policy before the election took place.[14] The party entered into coalition government with the Conservatives, who supported an increase in fees. Following the Browne Review the cap was controversially raised to £9,000 a year, approximately treble the previous cap; this sparked large student protests in London. The intention from the government of the time was that most universities would charge about £6,000, and that the £9,000 rate would only be charged in "exceptional" circumstances.[15] In practice most universities immediately began to charge the maximum £9,000 fee.[16] A judicial review against the raised fees failed in 2012, and so the new fee system came into use that September.[17]

So the argument here is: 'the unit of resource' (money) has suffered 'real-terms erosion' (underfunding), but allowing some already-wealthy universities to expand massively and take a larger share of that underfunding isn't the problem?

In the spirit of sharing some of my unaffordably-published research on social media, here is why T.S. Eliot would have run a mile from being called a 'public intellectual'
Eliot as Public Intellectual	5,367 words

Was T. S. Eliot a public intellectual? If we are to avoid anachronism, no. The compound was not in common use when he died in 1965; the earliest OED citation is from the New York Times in 1967, and in The Public Intellectual (2002) Helen Small dates its currency to the Nineties in America, and the Noughties in Britain. Moreover, as Stefan Collini has shown, “intellectual” as a noun did not enjoy a securely agreed usage in English in the early decades of the twentieth century – and it was a label that Eliot, at the heart of Anglophone intellectual life, actively resisted. “Let quacks, empirics, dolts debate” (1953) – a piece of light verse inspired by a photograph of a cat on a park bench – is the only poem he published which invokes “intellectuals” as a category, and then with Noël-Coward-ish asperity: “Let intellectuals address / The latest Cultural Congress”

For #SmallPoemSunday, @tomsnarsky.bsky.social here is Field Document, collected in *Dance On*, forthcoming from Wordrunner Press, November 15:
Field Document

I saw a woman on fire,
how she was burning,
I saw nothing like smoke,
only the eyes in a flame
clear like thought
never is. You can hear
this and not believe it
and she will not care.
Her eyes, though, do
see it all, finally.

Cover of Dance On, with a drawing of a dancing horse and the cursive in red "When the Gods to dancing may they always invite you".

That's a lovely reflection on the whole business. It's the least universal bit, maybe, but I like the graffitied folder, with the slogans, names and band names -- takes me back to my school days. Now, students cover their laptops in cool stickers.

There's a nice moment in the Philip Terry version of Inferno set on the campus of Essex where he compares the original campus layout and subsequent overlaid expansions and changes to using imperial and metric at the same time...

Those daily mini ghost stories The Uncanny are doing in the run up to Halloween keep reminding me of my Viz ghost box letters page.
Ghost Box fron Viz. Letters spoofing ghost stories. Sorry too much text to transcribe. First letter goes, for example, it was a normal enough day, I had just got back from doing the school run and I was sitting down having a nice cuppa before making a start on the housework. All of a sudden I heard a noise. It was probably a ghost.

DON’T say: “It’s dactylic”

DO say: “I hear horses galloping — how about you?”

DON’T say: “There’s a midline caesura”

DO say: “I really feel the poet is holding space for me here”

DON’T say: “Catalectic tetrameter”

DO say: “This line could use a little something — do you agree?”
