Excited to share our newest work! We asked whether RNA molecules need to be in a specific place in the cell to do their job. We found that a single RNA must reach the midbody, the structure that pinches two dividing cells apart, for cell division to finish efficiently. 🧵⬇️

New paper! How do RNAs "know" where to go inside a cell? We dug into the sequence elements that route RNAs to the right place. It turns out that, in mammals, they're surprisingly massive (>200 nt), multipartite, and wonderfully complicated. 🧵

In this time of introspection On the eve of study section I say to my reflection God, please spare me more rejection My reviewers criticize me And my colleagues all despise me Try to put it all behind me But that funding cliff is nipping at my heels

A mechanism for controlling mRNA localization to neuronal projections: Daniel Dominguez, Matthew Taliaferro @jmtali.bsky.social and collaborators implicated ALS-linked TDP-43 as inhibitor of mRNA accumulation in neurites, possibly by promoting their decay link.springer.com/article/10.1...

TDP-43 directly inhibits RNA accumulation in neurites through modulation of RNA stability - preLights
An intriguing twist! TDP-43 (linked to ALS) keeps RNAs out of neuronal projections by making them unstable preventing RNA buildup in neurites

Excited to share our latest work! We asked if and how TDP-43 regulates RNA transport in neurons and if this is misregulated in ALS. We found that it works to keep RNAs *out* of neurites, and that loss of TDP-43 activity results in specific RNAs aberrantly accumulating there.

Excited to share our latest work! In it, we develop a new method for studying RNA localization via proximity labeling: OINC-seq! In contrast to other proximity-based methods, labels deposited on RNAs are read directly by sequencing without the need for biotinylation. biorxiv.org/cgi/content/...
