In his @ardenpublisher.bsky.social edition of Christopher Marlowe’s Edward II, @jmasten.bsky.social carefully separates the original text from the play’s reputation to allow for fresh interpretations and discovers a new copy of the First Quarto in the process. Impressive.

From @jmasten.bsky.social's @ardenpublisher.bsky.social edition of Christopher Marlowe’s Edward II: “These notations represent centuries of prior readers who, along with me, now welcome you to collaborate in the reading, staging and interpretation of Edward II.” Powerful stuff.

Glad to see it out there in the world — thanks, @drewdaniel.bsky.social . And it’s already sustained some (additional) damage, very thematic.

While one early reader of 𝘌𝘥𝘸𝘢𝘳𝘥 𝘐𝘐 did bind it with other religious texts, here I’m not shown praying over the edition but reading from the preface—on the historical Edward’s graffitied tomb & the persistence of writing “on” Edward II. Ebook now available; paperback for pre-order (5/14)! Write on.

Why do I have to pretend that I'm going to print something in order to save it as a PDF. Why do I have to engage in a little ruse.
