“Hartley gives the reader a new version of the play with additions that are subtle and radical … the reader seems to be in the presence of a working writer, director and scholar in conversation with Shakespeare, separated by 425 years.” ―Current Shakespeare

@drsheeha.bsky.social's introduction to Arden of Faversham puts the reader in the world of the play so effectively that every character comes alive in a way that's rare for early modern drama. This was honestly the most enjoyable thing I've read in a long time. #Shakespeare

I felt like the Arden Fourth Series deserved a proper write up, so I started a little newsletter on Substack. currentshakespeare.substack.com Full reviews of Julius Caesar, Titus Andronicus and Edward II are in the works.

In her introduction @amylidster.bsky.social rarely focuses on Shakespeare and makes a compelling case that the collaborative play Henry VI Part 1 should be considered a serious work separate from the other history plays and has convinced one person it is much better than remembered.

From @jmasten.bsky.social's @ardenpublisher.bsky.social edition of Christopher Marlowe’s Edward II: “These notations represent centuries of prior readers who, along with me, now welcome you to collaborate in the reading, staging and interpretation of Edward II.” Powerful stuff.

In his @ardenpublisher.bsky.social edition of Christopher Marlowe’s Edward II, @jmasten.bsky.social carefully separates the original text from the play’s reputation to allow for fresh interpretations and discovers a new copy of the First Quarto in the process. Impressive.

My introduction to Shakespeare was "Everybody’s Shakespeare" (later "Mercury Shakespeare") by Orson Welles and his mentor Roger Hill. These condensed plays are hard to get but I haven't found a better place to start. #Shakespeare

Andrew James Hartley’s experience in the theater adds a number of new and interesting choices to a play that is very difficult to add to. Julius Caesar also happens to be one of my favorite works of Shakespeare and an excellent place to start. #Shakespeare

Curtis Perry and Ayanna Thompson do an excellent job with a chaotic text of a chaotic play that demands to be understood in the context of the most current scholarship. #Shakespeare

The General Editors of the @ardenpublisher.bsky.social Fourth Series have managed to make these new editions more accessible while maintaining the same level of scholarship. The expanded "How to use this edition" section is particularly helpful. Quite an achievement. #Shakespeare
