If you know a postdoc or graduate student that's had their future trajectory cut due to federal BS and they're looking for alternative paths point them towards a PUI with undergrad research. We do some great things with students and it can be very rewarding.(An ITYSL gif thread 1 of 5)

My NSF PRFB on the genetics of female polymorphism in hummingbirds was terminated yesterday. I don't have much to say, I'm just sad. We've discovered so much, and could have gone so much further. If anyone else is in the same boat, esp postdocs, please reach out, it would be good to connect.

Now that I've had tenure for a year I'm not sure if I'm complaining about things more because I have tenure or that things have gotten annoyingly worse? (Not worse as in bad here, but AI, student/faculty apathy, admin grumbles etc.).

I made this the other night while procrastinating, mainly because I thought all the posts about the blackout were boring. It feels like there is momentum bringing people together!
A poster for the economic blackout on February 28. It is a big red Jack rabbit on an aqua blue back ground. It says economic blackout in hand done black type. There are two black speech bubbles. One says “don’t buy stuff Friday February 28th. The other says we have power. Below it says No Amazon, Walmart, target, gas food, gas. Below that it says OK small business, use cash. Continuing to screen existing (and new) grants to comply with the EOs appears to be in direct violation of the restraining order. Funding agencies should instead be using this window to award as many grants as possible. What am I missing?

I think some people hear “grants” and think that without them, scientists and government workers just have less stuff to play with at work. But grants fund salaries for students, academics, researchers, and people who work in all areas of public service. “Pausing” grants means people don’t eat.
