Kemi's plan risks making it even less likely that pensioners downsize, so make housing even less flexible - if there's a tax break on the house but not on cash freed up by sale, IHT planners will tell granny to stay in the 6-bed. Partially offset by (needed) stamp duty reduction

NY Times just upped UK news-only subscription by 60% (!) so it's now cheaper to subscribe to "all access" than just news. Put another way, NYT is paying (existing subscriber) Brits to have access to recipes and reviews

Great minds/fools: I just ran exactly this. First three-day period of consecutive falls in bund yields and rises in both Italian and French yields since 2022

Does Google have a counting problem? Or perhaps the camera is £499, you pay an extra £100 for the rest of the phone? Either way v odd (from Google's own web site)

Also fascinating: One of the reporter's favourite pastimes is buying a particular brand of ceramic plates and bowls. I had no idea this was a thing, and no desire to try this out either.

Sure, every day is unusual now in markets. But still: Up today (as of a minute ago): S&P futures, oil, bond yields, gold, AND the dollar. Nothing makes sense any more.

Data-center spending is greater than that for canals, railroads and grid combined—creating jobs and stock-market wealth, while boosting inflation and crowding out housing.

Will it be exported via Lithuania (where it used to go), Latvia, Poland, Ukraine - or Russia? EU would need to lift sanctions before it could go via first three I believe, Ukraine obvious no, US just imposed new sanctions on Russia (market unclear if they apply to fertilizer, Platts said last week)

NASA picture of the day today is a real 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿beauty! This is a composite image of the ~5000yo Callanish Stones on the Isle of Lewis. The amazing Giuseppe Petricca has only gone and photographed the Sun at noon there, every few days, for a whole year. #Dedication 🔭🧪👌 ℹ️: science.nasa.gov/image-articl...
The imposing Callanish Stones stand talk with their shadows spanning out across the glass. It's a super clear sky, but looks cold. Above the central stone is a strange figure-of-8 shape of dots. This is the location of the Sun, at noon, on various different days across the year.

From discussions with actual boomers: You had to eat in the hotel when travelling because that could be pre-paid and so exempt from the capital controls that prevented you taking money with you. Could be avoided by being paid into a Swiss bank account, easier then as endless tax loopholes

I used to keep a big box of rejection letters for jobs I applied for on spec in the early 1990s recession, since nothing I could plausibly do was advertised, and when I finally got a job all the people I sat near bought a house in the Lawson boom and had negative equity
