Every piece of writing and reporting that has stuck from my career has been the ones where I really swung for the fences. I also did too much unpaid overtime, but at least people noticed my level of effort.

I always loved this picture. She seemed very human here, like someone I could chat over coffee with and get my mind absolutely boggled by her thoughts. Often the “women in stem” seem unattainable in their official portraits or in intense focus. This made her seem like a person.

One thing I don't miss abouts Toronto are the massive traffic issues on the highways. I opened up maps at 9am and all the highways are shaded red and backed up with traffic

As I check off each remaining to-do in Toronto, my time here is coming to a close. These past 3 weeks have been a positive bowshock to my system, like termination shock when exiting the heliosphere. As I grow into my own person, I have to make my own decisions, be my own ethical guide.

Cooking / baking bluesky is a much livelier community though so that's a great thing. That's the only thing I'd keep bsky on for.

Is bsky still worth using? I was testing this account and my mastodon account. Had to block bsky domains for mental health about a week ago. Kept cosocial mastodon live, and it seemed ok. Maybe I should stay off bsky for good.

Blast from the past, Nov 2000, six months after I joined Netscape and staff@mozilla.org. I signed it but the code was certainly not ready. Over the next 18 months, drivers@mozilla.org whipped things into shape enough that we could feel good bestowing Mozilla with the precious "1.0" version number.
Netscape 6 poster at the Computer History Museum, donated my Mozillian Marcia Knous.

The poster reads:

The Code
is Ready
are you?

[N logo] Netscape 6

The poster features screen shots of the browser, mail, and chat windows as well as the signatures of about 150 Netscape employees who made Netscape 6 happen.

I missed something that I should not have missed. Firefox got customizable keyboard shortcuts! The Mozilla accessibility team always punches well above its weight. Go Jamie! Looks like some good assists from Mike Kaply and Tom S., too. Load about:keyboard to start messing around.

I see people victim-blame and try to logic-out the Cornell 7 rape case. "Why would she go into the frat house? Why would she drink?" etc. It's easier than thinking about how many men have done similar things to women, and whether men *they personally know* have harassed or assaulted women.

I wrote this two years ago, when the Roberts Bank terminal expansion was clearly heading toward some kind of approval — but well before another new oil pipeline was going to feed into it. This Pacific Link pipeline will add even more noise stress to the underwater recordings included in this piece:

Critically endangered orcas in B.C. are struggling to navigate in a sea of shipping noise
Our need for transportation and shipping is causing a kind of pollution that’s invisible (and in this case, inaudible) to humans. What does all this noise mean for the 75 or so Southern Resident Kille...

before this, I'd preboil the tomatoes, peel skin, mash tomatoes, season, cook into tomato sauce on its own, then starting with a new pan, pan fry mirepoux, bacon, layer in the home made tomato sauce and add herbs, and start simmering it down. BUT THE NEW WAY IS FASTER!

I tried the social media cooking trend of putting halfed tomatoes cut side down on a pan, filling with other ingredients, spices, a bit of water, then cooking on medium heat, then peeling off the tomato skin when separating and then mashing the tomato into the paste - IT WORKS!!! SO DELICIOUS!!

Your career looks different than you wanted, but it’s pretty damn lovely. You get to do what you always wanted to do. Not everyone can say that. Things I never would have taken to heart if anyone told me when I was a new writer: pretty much all of the above The process is the point.

Some things I wish I had known when I was a new writer: Being accepted by traditional publishers has less to do with skill than whether they think they can sell it. Just because publishers aren’t ready for a story doesn’t mean readers aren’t. Writing the book is the easy part. 🧵

I strive to have my own social life that spans multiple continents! These articles really highlight that a lot of men don't have a self or their own thing going on. Whatever happened to going to a ball game on your own or just watching whatever sports at a pub? That's a social life too!

One of the most harrowing things about academia, when you're a grad student, is how vulnerable you are to how you're perceived by more senior researchers. Your career advancement depends on confidential letters of reference & private discussions amongst faculty. You have no information or control.
