I built an interview agent yesterday. You give it an initial question, a list of things you want to know, and a maximum number of question/answer rounds. It works but is painfully slow with gpt-5 with 30-40s waits between questions. gpt-4.1-mini is faster with 5-8s waits but the quality is poor.

I spent a couple days cooking up an AI agent to drive a browser to try to add ingredients to an online grocery store shopping cart. I got it to work, but it’s fragile and takes 15-20 minutes to add 6 items to a cart, and costs about $1.25 in tokens. The hype is much more impressive than the reality.

It’s fascinating to me that people hear about coding with AI and then think that it eliminates the need for the things we’ve collectively learned are needed to make software work (design, testing, refactoring, data modelling, contracts, etc.). The widespread magical thinking is wild to see.

How do we square the fact that, “the mind can only do one thing at a time”, with a world of AI tools and expectations that an individual’s (or a team’s) output is going to be dramatically increased. I struggle to see how this won’t exacerbate burnout for all but the best meditators.

I called 911 for the first time ever. I was in my backyard kicking a soccer ball around with my son when I heard a weird thump sound. I opened our back gate and found a man collapsed in the alley, who I later learned was our neighbour from the end of the block. Paramedics came and I think he’s okay.

Traffic calming should be entirely about creating space for hordes of kids to roam around the neighborhood on bikes. I want that in my East Van neighborhood. Riding bikes across, around, through, over, under, and in the neighborhood was a highlight of my childhood in the 1980’s that kids miss today.

Partial degradation is always interesting. The central burner on our 10+ year old Black and Decker toaster no longer works, so it only toasts one side of the bread at a time. You can still make toast, you just have to flip it after each side is done.

I've been using TypeScript, Node, Remix, Drizzle, React, tRPC, etc. for almost a year now. They're great when they work, but the magic baked in to make them easy to use also makes them heinous to debug when things break. It's wild that this massive design fail permeates everything in this ecosystem.

I read through medium.com/@douglasreis... and implemented it in Go in github.com/jkakar/prime over the last couple days. It was fun to develop some intuition for backpropagation. I understand more deeply now why @karpathy.bsky.social describes the nodes as communicating with each other.
