autovectorization seems terrible so it’s probably worth starting with (2), but i do kinda wonder if you could produce a set of library functions in the style of (1) that /only/ depend on fusion RULES under the control of the SIMD library itself.

i think we’re kind of stuck with needing to provide APIs like: 1) normal `Vector` stuff, accepts hints for width and just tries to chunk things up according to whatever your numeric + arch allows 2) explicit chunking API that looks more like `conduit` or `streaming`

width is annoying though yeah, and it doesn’t help that `vector` is (imo) ill-suited for this sort of work. stream fusion is a cool idea, but implementing it via RULES is fragile and you just have to jump through so many hoops to get everything to play along the way you want it to.

i think x86 SIMD w/ scalar fallback implementations for all the things you want to accelerate might be more evil than CUDA tbqh. maybe it’s just been too long since i’ve used CUDA but this is just sort of miserable from the PoV of providing a consistent API.
