@wecandobettermpls.bsky.social pays to promote anti-Chughtai posts on FB to reach out to residents and voters of Ward 10 like me. I made this comment to engage them in democratic debate. They deleted it. How are you doing better by suppressing free speech of Ward 10 residents? #minneapolis #Ward10
My FB Comment screenshot: "this is false fear mongering, and continue to reduce Ward 10 to Uptown and completely ignore the other neighborhoods in Ward 10. Aisha has a proven track record of advocating first for her residents--all of us. She has fought for rent control and other measures that would make housing more affordable in one of the most dense areas of the city. Even if it were true that "affordable housing" was just a slogan for Chughtai, that is still better than Millard, who consistently only speaks to and for homeowners and refuses to acknowledge the reality of renters in this city. Millard's focus on Uptown makes clear her constituents are the business owners who don't live here. Her campaign donations and the outside groups pouring funds into getting her elected come in large droves from landlords who are fighting to make sure they can profit off Ward 10 without a care for the people who actually live here (https://www.lydiamillard.com/). They are trying to buy a city council seat by completely ignoring the lives of those of us who live here. If you care about Ward 10, the vote is clear: Aisha Chughtai has our backs."

In his recent oversimplified misunderstanding of queer theory, Matthew Vines wrote, "a heterosexual person can be 'queer' in this configuration if they simply reject monogamy." Pretty sure anyone who has come out as poly (especially in the church) can tell you about how...
meme of Aragorn in Lord of the Rings, it reads "ONE DOES NOT SIMPLY REJECT MONOGAMY"

Everything is terrible and I’m angry and upset and tired. But also, I spent the afternoon making this beautiful quiche that I’m going to go share with friends who are also angry, upset, and tired. And tomorrow I’m going to keep working against the bullshit.

4: There’s a sacrifice! The ritual echoes Christian baptism: “DIE AND LIVE AGAIN!” It is offered to a goddess al-Lat in ancient Nabatea. Women's leadership in this cult parallels texts we have from the Roman-era cult to the Egyptian goddess Isis. Newitz even notes al-Lat was elsewhere known as Isis!

2: “I write pamphlets about how I’m fucking an angel” (Soph). Newitz’s depiction of Spiritualism shows how women have long made positive associations between sex and spirituality. Using religious language allows women, including queer women!, to share pleasure and hide it in plain sight.

All the crap people are giving all the cool folks leaving for Bluesky keeps reminding me of this amazing short story, HARMONY by Seanan McGuire, that I loved to give students to make sure at least one professor told them it's okay to take the ball and leave.
Text from short story: "It's not retreating to go where people will treat you like you matter." Miriam pushed herself up onto one elbow. "It's not retreating to let yourself be happy. We're not cutting ourselves off from the world. We're still working, still traveling, still going to stay involved with politics and making things better. Hell, the fact that we're here is going to bring life to the local economy-it's creating a local economy-and drop a big blue spot in the middle of an even big-ger red splash. We're not under any obligation to stand around and let people kick us for not being exactly like them. And if someone shows up who isn't exactly like us but wants a place to go, we'll let them in. We'll welcome them home." "Really?" asked Nan. "Really;' said Miriam, and kissed her, and conversation stopped, at least for a little while.

Just finished this book that I picked up at a queer bookshop in London, because how could I not read a book titled after Ruth 1:16? It’s an absolutely stunning story that explores family secrets, queerness, and diaspora—just like the book of Ruth.

Indexing for a brilliant colleague today! Sarah Emanuel's latest book--forthcoming with @fortresspress.bsky.social--is PHENOMENAL. It is definitely going to be one of the most important books written about Paul, and everyone needs to read it ASAP once it's published.

Title: HOMO URBANUS OR URBAN HOMOS? METRONORMATIVE TROPES AND SUBCULTURAL QUEERNESSES AROUND PHILO AND THE THERAPEUTS
Journal of Ancient Judaism
Abtract: This article analyzes how space and place affect the constructions of sexuality, gender, and urbanity in Philo’s Vita Contemplativa and the histories of rural queer Jewish wo/men. Extending the work of David Runia, who calls Philo an “ambivalent homo urbanus,” I show how Philo’s ambivalence stems from discomfort with the “urban homos” who perpetuate a city’s vice. Philo emphasizes a form of metronormativity in his portrayal of an urban sexual immoderation that is rooted in racialized, Roman depictions of cities and their sexuality. Philo’s cure is embodied in the Therapeutic rejection of the city and all sexual praxis. Despite Philo’s intentions, urban queerness cannot infect the Therapeuts because they may already have been embodying queerness in the wild. By placing the Therapeuts alongside evidence of other subcultures of queerness and gender egalitarianism in Roman Egypt, the article concludes by recentering the rural, queer Jewish wo/men found in the Vita Contemplativa.

"We avoid the illegitimate, sex worker Mary because she forces us to confront the ways our Christmas theologies are rooted in a pious purity that not only criminalizes sex work but also perpetuates deviant assumptions about nonnormative sexual arrangements." (from my queer lectionary comments)

“Behold, the Lord’s Whore”? Slavery, Prostitution, and Luke 1:38
James N. Hoke
Luther College, USA (I no longer work here!)

Abstract
In Luke 1:38, Mary acknowledges that she is to bear a son, calling herself the δούλη κυρίου, “the Lord’s slave.” The ambiguity surrounding the “how” of her conception raises numerous sexual questions. Specifically, what might it mean in such an ancient, sexual- ized context to label oneself a slave? Though Mary submits to God, her master (κύριος), some early hearers of Luke’s story surely would have pictured this submission in confor- mity to the slave conditions familiar to them. Therefore, the slippery connections between the conditions of the δούλη and the πόρνη (“prostitute”) in the first and second centuries ce become relevant. In other words, it is probable that some would have heard Mary’s submission as δούλη κυρίου as her professing to be the πόρνη κυρίου, “the Lord’s whore.” After arguing the plausibility of this potentially shocking reading, this article turns to the work of theorist Gayle Rubin to consider its implications.

I wrote a script you can use when you call, so there's no excuse.
"Hello, I am [name] and I live in [town/city], zip code [number]. I am calling to urge Representative [name] to issue a statement condemning transphobia, specifically Speaker Mike Johnson's rule that the use of bathrooms and other private spaces at the capitol must correspond with a person's sex assigned at birth, which effectively bans trans people--including Rep. Sarah McBride--from using these spaces. On this Trans Day of Remembrance, I urge you to condemn this specific and targeted transphobic attack, along with all transphobia that leads to the physical and psychological harm of trans people across the nation, including our district. I hope you will make this statement and stand in solidarity with trans people, including your fellow Congresswoman. Thank you for your time and the work you do."

Time to get serious about this #aarsbl23 #acrel paper on queerness, disability, and ideologies of cure. From the abstract: "When it comes to ableism and cisheteronormativity, it is easier to cure individuals than design societies that don't privilege certain embodiments as 'normal' or 'whole.'"
