Congrats on profitability! It'd be really interesting to hear about the business model itself. Software companies are dominated by people costs, for example, but I suspect that's a drop in the bucket compared to hardware runs.

I needed code indexing of major systems to help me research software. And now Standard subscribers get access to the same dataset. At the moment around 60 databases and programming languages are indexed (searchable, browsable), and the full 400+ project corpus is the goal.

That's the size I'd expect! I was going off the numbers in storage settings, but that must include cached data. I still think it's hundreds of mb when you look at the download sizes 🙃

I wanted to update my keyboard's keymap for the first time in 11 years and the firmware just compiled and flashed in the first go. I feel like this is only possible with OSS. If this was official software from the manufacturer, I doubt it'd still work after that long.

I've been in this situation ~20 years ago (oof). You just gotta find a host that's large enough to absorb it (usually cheapest option) or has fancy hardware firewalls (expensive bc niche).

There's a tech wave that's causing people to completely reinvent their businesses, but not blue ocean? 🤨 Capital requirements might be true, but in my batch YC invested in a rocket company. I think these investments happen, but don't have as much awareness in SWE communities.

Jimmy Zelinskie @jimmy.zelinskie.com · 18/08/2026
I haven't confirmed, but these days I notice lots of YC companies are knock offs of existing companies, rather than being the first to market. I'm not saying there shouldn't be competition, but lots of launches I look at now and go "oh, that's an ___ competitor". Has something changed?

Idk to blame 1Password or macOS, but pretty regularly the emoji picker on macOS just ceases to show up until you quit 1pw (maybe because it left secure keyboard entry on or something?).

IIRC bells calls themselves microbrewery because they still do everything in Comstock but then ship nationally from there. so actually they are keeping the best for themselves and exporting us the trash, which we will glad consume

Apple also has a tool that exports from Google Photos. Has anyone tried it? Does it just work off Takeout? I can't try it because it doesn't work if you have your iCloud data encrypted. support.apple.com/en-us/118257

Is it still true that over a year after they removed the APIs for exporting images, you still cannot properly backup/export out of Google Photos? Google Takeout does not provide original quality OR shared albums. issuetracker.google.com/issues/36877...

I think if I always worked on a bigger monitor, cmux would be more appealing. I'm often on the stock MBP display which is so small that I mostly end up eeping things in fullscreen and swapping workspaces (shoutouts to InstantSpaceSwitcher).

i learned a cute trick today! you can customize the colors of the terminal and ghost icon for ghostty: macos-icon = custom-style macos-icon-ghost-color = #9c64fe macos-icon-screen-color = #191919
A screenshot of a macOS dock with 3 icons: activity monitor, ghostty, and brave. The ghostty icon has a darker gray terminal and pink ghost rather than the typical dark blue terminal and light blue ghost.

ICE is engaged in a very large escalation nationwide, with the agency claiming to be hitting record arrest numbers amid the return of quotas. This has gotten very little attention from the media because ICE learned lessons from the chaotic disasters of Kristi Noem’s tenure. Keep a watch.

FWIW, I wish my previous landlord cleared the gutters. A tree grew out of it (kinda cool) but also the roof would leak water down the walls inside when it rained.
