Professor Jim Flynn (@jimflynn9.bsky.social) will start off our seminar series on Friday, Sept 4th presenting, "When the moon makes you drive like you've had too much wine: The lunar cycle and fatal car crashes." This was also coauthored with 2 of our previous MA students from last year's cohort.

Some of the worst anxiety of my life was in the summer of 2007 when I did an internship in Boston and had to drive everywhere using printed out Mapquest direction.

The second paper links 49 years of lunar cycles to FARS crash data and BRFSS sleep data to show that the ambient light from the full moon leads to worse sleep and increased crash risk in the days just after the full moon, with bigger effects where the moon's light is brightest.

The first uses exogenous variation from the 2002 World Cup, where games took place in the middle of the night for US-based fans to show that areas where people were more likely to watch late night games saw large increases in fatal crashes the next day. bsky.app/profile/jimf...

Are you at #WEAI in Denver and interested in how sleep-loss increases fatal car accidents? Come see me present two papers with novel ID addressing this, including my favorite titled paper of all-time: "When the Moon Makes You Drive Like You've Had Too Much Wine" Details below.

I think it’s fine to have a mediocre player who is a great pundit on a panel like this. Unfortunately, the gap between Henry/Zlatan and Lalas in punditry is just as big as the gap in footballing ability, which makes it painful to watch.

These effects are large enough that they are preventing some unintended pregnancies - and yet births still rose 2.2% in ban states (Dench et al. 2024). Both things can be true: people are having safer sex, AND women who want abortions aren't getting them.
000
Jim Flynn @jimflynn9.bsky.social · 18/06/2026
We also ask: are people responding to the policy, or to increased travel distance to a provider? Using county-level variation, the behavioral response doesn't scale with distance - people respond to knowing abortion is illegal in their state, not to the logistics of obtaining one

Jim Flynn @jimflynn9.bsky.social · 18/06/2026
In our preferred SDID specification, we find that post-Dobbs abortion bans led to a 21% decline in gonorrhea rates among reproductive age populations, a 5.4% increase in condom purchases, and suggestive declines in self-reported sexual behavior among high school students.
100
Jim Flynn @jimflynn9.bsky.social · 18/06/2026
To address this, we look at gonorrhea rates from the CDC (an established biological marker for sexual behavior), condom and emergency contraception purchases using NielsenIQ scanner data, and self-reported survey responses from the YRBS.

Jim Flynn @jimflynn9.bsky.social · 18/06/2026
This raises the question of whether these more salient shocks to access might be more likely to influence individual decision-making before a pregnancy occurs.
100
Jim Flynn @jimflynn9.bsky.social · 18/06/2026
The abortion bans in the wake of the Dobbs vs. Jackson Supreme Court decision were remarkably salient, both due to much more aggressive restrictions that were put in place, and due to the controversy surrounding the decision itself.
100
Jim Flynn @jimflynn9.bsky.social · 18/06/2026
In order for it to change people’s behavior, individuals have to know that they have lost access to abortion, or that their travel distance to the nearest provider has increased. Previous restrictions did not always break through to the average American.
100
Jim Flynn @jimflynn9.bsky.social · 18/06/2026
Several prior studies have looked at whether abortion restrictions lead to changes in sexual behavior and short-term contraceptive use, with most studies finding null results or relatively small changes. We argue this is partially due to the low salience of previous restrictions
100
Jim Flynn @jimflynn9.bsky.social · 18/06/2026
Using three different data sources that proxy sexual behavior and track contraceptive sales, we find that people in states which passed abortion bans began having less sex overall, and were more likely to use condoms when they do have sex.
100
Jim Flynn @jimflynn9.bsky.social · 18/06/2026
We ask a fundamentally different question: did the abortion bans enacted in the wake of Dobbs change people’s sexual behavior?
100
Jim Flynn @jimflynn9.bsky.social · 18/06/2026
A great deal of research on the post-Dobbs abortion landscape focuses on outcomes which take place after a pregnancy occurs - how travel distance to the nearest provider impacts fertility and who ends up getting abortions.

Our findings have broader implications for understanding the cost of sleep loss, especially when it is voluntary and recreation-based. Our results suggest that increased policing around late-night events or public service announcements during games may mitigate these harms.
100
Jim Flynn @jimflynn9.bsky.social · 18/08/2025
We estimate that late-night World Cup matches were associated with an increase of 28.8 total deaths on the days following German matches. Using the 2024 DOT estimate of the Value of a Statistical Life, this represents a cost of $394.6 million.
100
Jim Flynn @jimflynn9.bsky.social · 18/08/2025
We run a placebo where we repeat our analysis using the 2006 World Cup in Germany, where all games took place during the day for American fans. We find no effect, suggesting that our main results are driven by sleep loss and not the World Cup matches themselves.
100
Jim Flynn @jimflynn9.bsky.social · 18/08/2025
Additionally, we show that our results are not driven by crashes involving alcohol or bad weather, and are driven by crashes involving 20-60-year-old males without children in the car, consistent with World Cup-viewing demographics.

This table displays our main estimates on PUMAs with 30, 40, and 50% German heritage, for all German games and then “big” German games. This demonstrates that there is a dose-response, with more heavily German PUMAs displaying a larger increase.
100
Jim Flynn @jimflynn9.bsky.social · 18/08/2025
There are spikes in fatal accidents in the high-German PUMAs on five of the seven World Cup matchdays, including the opening match and each of the “knockout round” matches, which we define as “big” games.

Jim Flynn @jimflynn9.bsky.social · 18/08/2025
This graph displays daily rates of fatal accidents for US PUMAs with >50% German heritage compared to PUMAs with <30 German heritage during the 2002 World Cup. German matchdays are marked with a vertical line.

Second, Germany has by far the largest number of Americans who trace their ancestry to a foreign country. This graph displays heritage from major countries involved in the 2002 World Cup from the 2000 Census. Germany is the only one who reached the semifinals of the tournament.
