This is genuinely so pathetic and so telling of authoritarian thinking. Republicans are the party of old people whose kids don't wanna talk to them anymore, so of course they cry to their politicians about it.

"Turning most of Florida’s local governments into beggars is not viewed by the supporters of the amendment as a bug. It is a feature." Excellent opinion piece in the Miami Herald challenging the legitimacy of Amendment 3 written by the former mayor of Key Biscayne, Michael W. Davey. 🎁🔗

We get tons of one-off ads on every website. We should be able to reverse that to pay for single-serving increments of things we actually want.

No one truly wants just one article, they just want the, relatively infrequently. Pay $10 for 10 reads and have the website track and get the $ back to the publisher. I’ll call the technical aspects trivial as there is already far more tracking of clicks & access for ad purposes.

Since I'm up early and killing time before the early train, let's talk about why the Boston Globe's coverage of changes to roads in Somerville stinks, because it's been framed entirely as "making it harder to drive in Somerville." As a long-time car owner in Somerville, no, it hasn't.

Is it woke to be horrified by what happened at Cornell--and by the "boys will be boys" excuse-making of so many then and now? If so, perhaps we should all be a little more woke?

It's crazy that TERFs are so cooked in their own rank juices they don't even talk about actual violence against women, even when it's front page news. It's all the imaginary specter of the Trans Infiltrator.

Twenty-seven years ago this week, a 21-year-old college student named Matthew Shepard was found tied to a fence outside Laramie, Wyoming. He died six days later simply because he was gay. More of his story in the Alt-Text:
On October 6, 1998, Matt left a bar with two men who lured him out under false pretenses. They drove him to a remote area, brutally attacked him, robbed him, tied him to a fence, and left him alone in the freezing night.

Eighteen hours later, a cyclist found him - at first thinking he was a scarecrow.

Matt’s parents, Judy and Dennis Shepard, were overseas when they got the call. By the time they reached the hospital in Colorado, Matt was in a coma. He never regained consciousness. They never got to say goodbye.

Dennis once said Matt was almost too tender-hearted - the kind of person who couldn’t even step on a bug. Friends described him as a “light of joy,” someone who never met a stranger. The night he left that bar, he’d been planning an LGBTQ awareness event at his university.

Years later, Judy Shepard shared that she truly believed by now, things would be different - that people would be safe, equal, and accepted. “I am frustrated that we’re not done,” she said. “I am ecstatic that we have come this far. But there’s just so much left to do.”

And she’s right.

Hate crimes still happen. Basic rights are still being denied.

Let’s honor Matthew’s memory not only by remembering his story, but by continuing the work. By refusing to look away. By choosing compassion over hate, and courage over silence.

Jesus was manly, just not in a way that any of them can understand. Instead of bullying, he stood up to bullies. Instead of licking boots, he fought injustice. Instead of cozying up to the rich, he overthrew their tables and helped the poor. A vision of masculinity they just can’t imagine.
