Yes every woman has been harassed, many assaulted. But every woman has also experienced invisible loss from moments she avoided harassment. She felt a space becoming unsafe, so she left, while men stayed on. And in leaving, she lost: opportunities, experiences, learning, promotions, even simply fun.

Sir Ian McKellen performing a monologue from Shakespeare’s Sir Thomas More on the Stephen Colbert show. Never have I heard this monologue performed with such a keen sense of prescience. Nor have I ever been in this exact historical moment.TY Sir Ian, for reaching us once again. #Pinks #ProudBlue

Turned down last week: 2 festivals with no budget for speakers 1 writing course with no budget for teachers 1 film project with no budget to option the book - plus they wanted me to write the screenplay. For free. Don't do it, kids. Don't work for free. Because to them, what's free is worthless.

There is no more "state of the humanities" as such. There is no condition in which the humanities are under attack in which the whole university is not under attack. There is no condition in which the university is under attack that the whole of educational
infrastructure, public and private, from pre-K up, is not under attack. And there is no condition in which education is under attack
in which civil society can remain unimperiled. There is no sense calling for independent or solitary action by something called "the humanities" when that category has been so thoroughly absorbed by concerted attacks on democratic governance, due process of law, rights to privacy, security, assembly, and expression.
We are all humanists now.

I began to reply to this post with an assertion that this woman lacks any semblance of critical thinking. But, thinking about it, she's probably trapped in an algorithm which constantly feeds her the same propaganda. This applies in real life too, some people only ever interact with the same views

This is the result of propaganda media. The stupidity this woman regurgitates is LEARNED. It has been TAUGHT to her by unscrupulous media manipulators. Deliberately programming the innocent with false information to cause this lunacy will kill us all eventually.

The weekend! Why not write a quick email to your MP to encourage them to stop #UKHE spiraling? With the change in leadership and Burnham's focus on regional strengths, there's a window to change government's strategy. Template with suggested low-cost interventions: docs.google.com/document/d/e...
calvin & hobbes cartoon. Hobbes has squared up, fists balled, and frown firmly on his face and asks 'so we go on the offensive'. Calvin, with an evil glint in his eyes says 'right. here's a notepad and pencil'. A delighted hobbes looks straight at the viewer and says 'oh boy, blackmail!'

"Quiet in the Bay" by British painter Richard Thorn
This painting captures a bright harbor scene with an impressionistic emphasis on light and color. A sea of textured white and orange impasto highlights depicts shimmering sunlight reflecting on blue water. A small blue boat rests at anchor amid floating buoys and bright reflections. A dark harbor wall stretches across the upper third, separating the bay from a hazy coastline and pale sky. Deep cobalt and ultramarine blues dominate the water, contrasting against brilliant whites and warm oranges. Thick, choppy paint strokes give the water's surface a lively, tactile quality. The deep shadows of the harbor wall and boats create a strong contrast against the blinding, reflective sun glares.

Put into pools of one, no escape from them. No opportunity to make your personal case. No minutes were taken about why certain people were chosen. Consultation paperwork not read. Everything was as bad as it could have been. The trauma, as you can see, hasn't gone away!

People from another closing department were transferred elsewhere. We "couldn't" be. We were split into two groups: those who were going and those who were kept on for the teachout. Now the teachout is over, those colleagues who covered in aren't being made redundant....

We wrote to MPs. Their letters made no difference. Nor did those from scholarly societies, nor petitions, nor bad national press, nor an offer of financial support. It was targeted and ideological.

It is hard. I've survived a redundancy round (last year), but understand how little separates me from those who didn't. I have written extensively about how to change big structures, but right now what is needed is old fashioned pressure politics. Literally turning up with mates at Mp surgeries.

Can you suggest what else we could have done? It's hard to explain to someone who hasn't yet found themselves in this situation personally (I hope?) how crushing the dawning realisation is that nothing you do will stop what is a fait accompli.

I couldn't have been louder when I was made redundant. I even brought in an offer of external help. Every argument/solution was crushed by that juggernaut. There is no stopping a university that is determined. Which isn't to say we shouldn't protest, just that I am pessimistic about success...

The past few years have been soo weird. To those of us working in universities, it feels like there's an urgent existential threat to the sector, that a disaster is occurring around us. Meanwhile, political leaders seem indifferent & senior leadership acts like we should pretend everything normal.
