Free online training on how to administer naloxone now available
The state is offering a free online training to teach people how to use naloxone, which helps reverse opioid overdoses.
The Pennsylvania Department of Drug and Alcohol Problems’ naloxone and opioid overdose response training also offers education on how to prevent overdoses, how to spot an opioid overdose, how to communicate a compassionate response and where to obtain naloxone.
The training consists of five 20-minute modules and is available for anyone interested in learning about naloxone, where to obtain it, and how to administer it. Healthcare professionals can receive two hours of continuing education credits for taking the course.
“Overdoses can happen anytime, anywhere – every Pennsylvanian who knows how to recognize an overdose and use naloxone to reverse it has the potential to save a life,” said state Department of Drug and Alcohol Problems Secretary Latika Davis-Jones via a press release.
Other information participants will learn from the training include: how to determine when someone has overdosed, especially in the complex drug-supply environment. Participants will be able to spot an overdose when substances are compounded with sedatives like xylazine and medetomidine. People will also learn tips for educating others on how naloxone works -- by attaching to opioid receptors and reversing and stopping effects of other opioids -- and about overdose prevention and response.
