every time I see that "what if video games 100% personalized to me" post go by, I think about how you sports weirdos have gotten so agitated over sports events that I *went and tried to watch baseball* just for the joy of experiencing it with you, and I wonder what it is like to not feel that.

It's a little appalling how long it's been!! but it was definitely when I lived in Charlottesville, and, hey, that's 20+ years. Somewhere I have her Sappho translation, too -- not signed, but read a lot more recently.

not to downplay what my math friends are going through but I think this metaphor applies to so much of modern life for so many people www.quantamagazine.org/is-ai-the-en...
It's as if you were teleported to the peak of a tall mountain. Surrounded by fog, you have no idea where you are, or what's around you. You do not know how your mountain connects to others, and you have no equipment to help you explore, no way to help someone else join you. If you had climbed the mountain yourself, you would have experienced how the human body adapts to altitude and changes in oxygen levels. You might have had to invent tools to navigate, to climb steep cliffs, or to make a shelter. You might have encountered a fellow explorer, gotten lost together in a hidden valley, and found a plant that could be turned into a life-saving medicine.
Instead you're perched on the peak but in the dark, while the maker of the teleportation machine tells you that it can explore the wilderness better than any human.

I also have a set of values that I apply to education which are quite fixed and so I am not open minded about things like Alpha School or obvious political ideology-driven initiatives. I'm not going to stroke my chin over whether or not Alpha School could "work." It's a bad idea from bad people.

Looking around at the so-called education "thought leader" space - because, why not me? - and it seems like having very few thoughts and rarely if ever changing those thoughts is the key to success. Unfortunately, I have lots of thoughts and am very open to changing them when evidence suggests it.

Exactly! Or if you are in an area where the signage isn't very good or is hard to read from the car. I moved to central PA almost exactly 3 years ago and I love setting myself a destination, getting slightly lost and then getting myself unlost (or seeing what I find via the slight lostness)

Also? Nobody's making you use GPS and turn-by-turn computer voice navigation now. So right now could be a kind of "before GPS". It's a bit like asking about "before AI".

My car doesn't have GPS (it's old) and I don't use turn-by-turn voice navigation on my phone. I usually write out directions (from an online map so I can name landmarks -- "turn right onto X St, will be a bank on the corner").

Same re paper maps. Also, driving to explore rather than just to get to a particular place (I think GPS etc has made "just to get to a particular place" more common). "Where does that highway lead to?"

They quoted me in this New Yorker piece about AI today. www.newyorker.com/culture/the-...
“Let’s say there’s a world or time line I exist in where A.I. has been subject to regulation. It is ethical. It has no footprint environmentally,” the novelist Jeff VanderMeer, a prominent critic of A.I., told me over the phone. “With those guardrails in place, would I read an A.I. book? All I can say is no. And the reason is, in part, because I want to read something coming from a particular mind.” Using A.I., he said, “feels like a betrayal of the whole point of why you’re a writer.”

When Coxon was suddenly ALL OVER the media, it felt to many like that was because his story deserved that much interest i.e. that the media was doing its job informing the public of an important threat. The wall-to-wall media coverage wasn't organic though, it was orchestrated: >>

Damn. With the alt text:
The incident fits a broader pattern in the discourse around 'free speech' and 'cancel culture':
[Section highlighted]
whatever comes from the top down is freedom; whatever comes from the bottom up is bullying and censorship.
[End highlight]
When Macklemore is dropped at the behest of the billionaire stadium owner Robert Kraft, it's an exercise of the freedom of businesses to 'demonstrate their values' by deciding whom to platform. But when Ed Sheeran's fans decide not to buy tickets to his performances, or even demand refunds, it's bullying, mob behaviour. Since most people are not billionaires and do not own stadiums, they can exercise meaningful power only collectively. The collective exercise of power must therefore be demonised.
