Sunday fact: Russia has sustained at least 1.4 million casualties in the war with Ukraine. In fact, that’s 50 percent more than the US in all of WW2 on two fronts liberating and occupying the world. Russia now controls less land than they had one month into the invasion. Slava Ukrainii!

danah boyd recently argued that social media (as we knew it) is mostly dead; what we have now is parasocial media: journals.sagepub.com/doi/10.1177/... I agree. Networked social media is disappearing, replaced by a new logic/structure of content creator, creator-centered community, & algorithm.

“AI is changing what it means to be a democratic citizen.” Andrew Sorota and @jhendler.bsky.social, who lead work on AI and democracy at the Office of Eric Schmidt, share the three layers of AI’s influence on governance – and how we can design something better 🧵:

Coauthored a new piece on AI & democracy. “Today's democracy is not ready for this. Our institutions were designed for a world in which power was exercised visibly, information traveled slowly enough to be contested, and reality felt more shared, if imperfectly. All of this was already fraying..”

Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei warns AI will wipe out many entry-level jobs in tech, law, consulting and finance within 1–5 years. I think middle and senior white-collar jobs get killed too. If AI can do the routine work well enough, firms need fewer people. UBI or AI upskilling won’t be enough.

It's hard to overstate how much 36% year-on-year increases in employee health insurance costs are absolutely wrecking the budgets of school districts up and down New Jersey. Why are health insurance costs flying up so fast? And is there anything elected officials can do to stop it?

Anyway I'm rambling now, but I'll just leave you with two thoughts: 1) "recognizing, abstracting, & applying patterns" is a useful way to tie together all the various things AI can do; 2) consider that human cognition might just be a unfathomably more data-rich & sophisticated version of same.

Common Sense, published 250 years ago today.
Men who look upon themselves born to reign, and others to obey, soon grow insolent; selected from the rest of mankind their minds are early poisoned by importance; and the world they act in differs so materially from the world at large, that they have but little opportunity of knowing its true interests, and when they succeed to the government are frequently the most ignorant and unfit of any throughout the dominions.

Tom Stoppard holds a special place in my heart and, I suspect, in the heart of everyone else who was ever told they thought too much to be an actor. R&G may be the best play of the 20th century, but Arcadia is, for me personally, the best play of the last 400 years.

Graphic with the text: 10 TRUMP ATTACKS ON KIDS
1. Made the largest SNAP (food stamps) cuts in history.
2. Limits school lunch for kids by imposing new red tape.
3. Reduces after-school and summer programs for poor kids by requiring extra paperwork.
4. Slashes the Children’s Health Insurance Program, which provides health care for half of all kids.
5. Rips health care away by making it harder for parents to cover their kids through the Affordable Care Act.
6. Takes money away from public schools, meaning larger class sizes and fewer teachers per student.
7. Guts Head Start, which provides early childhood education, health, nutrition, and other services to
low-income children.
8. Undermines public health and vaccines.
9. Freezes funds used to train teachers.
10. Shuts down parts of the Office of Civil Rights, which helps kids who get discriminated against in school.
