Prepare for War?
The call by UK evangelical leader Pete Greig for the church to “prepare for war” illustrates the need for greater discernment when prophesying about politics.

UPDATE: Compulsory redundancies have been taken off the table. Victory? Not quite. A large number of excellent colleagues are leaving in haste - some by next Monday - via the "voluntary" scheme. We know that our senior leaders treat us with disdain. So sad. Entirely avoidable.

Two Visions of England After Christendom
The English divide is not just between nationalism and multi-culturalism but two rival nostalgias for late Christendom. One is idolatrous; the other fails to apprehend global change.

Or… he could admit that the landmark global conference (on illicit finance) that he promised before Keir Starmer entered Downing Street has still not happened. Why is the British state so good at rapid reaction and so bad at following through on promises?

The Crisis in Britain’s Universities
The cuts that have been proposed at the University of Exeter demonstrates the crisis of purpose in Britain’s universities. Should not universities also be places to prepare for "eternal dwellings"?

PS2: What's disturbing is that there has been a huge increase in p/t very highly paid staff since 2024. This is the very peiod of financial crisis. Can the University of Exeter explain why they made these appointments while declaring crisis? Detail is on p.83. www.exeter.ac.uk/.../pdfs/ann...

PS1: it's worth pointing out that many of the new appointment are in p/t roles so the FTE count is lower than 404 head count in 2025. This will mean that the overall pay burden on the institution will be somewhat less than I estimate above.

The growth in these posts directly correlates with the over-expansion and financial crisis of universities. So, we may ask whether it is in fact the bloating of management which is the actual cause of the financial crisis. Has their "strategic leadership" in fact led to this mess? [7/8]
161
John Heathershaw @jheathershaw.bsky.social · 25/06/2026
Since 2021, there have been no pay reviews for professors meaning that you can only get a pay increase by taking on a managerial role. Those earning >£100K are typically deans and pro-vice chancellors, or their assistants and deputies, who do very little research or teaching. [6/8]
140
John Heathershaw @jheathershaw.bsky.social · 25/06/2026
On Tuesday, the university proposed a near-25% cut to middle-earning academic staff in humanities and social sciences. Even most full professors are paid much less than £100,000. Most highly paid staff are paid more not due to their academic work but by virtue of their "strategic leadership". [5/8]
130
John Heathershaw @jheathershaw.bsky.social · 25/06/2026
It is reasonable to assume 20-25% of staff costs go on these employees who are 6-7% of Exeter's 6,000 staff. [4/8]
130
John Heathershaw @jheathershaw.bsky.social · 25/06/2026
Assumingly conservatively that the average pay for these people is £125,000, that's over £50 million in salaries out of a total salary burden for the university of £300 million in 2024/25. This excludes pensions, other allowances, etc which tend to be much higher for highly paid staff.[3/8]
130
John Heathershaw @jheathershaw.bsky.social · 25/06/2026
The number of staff earning over £100,000 increased from 157 in 2020/21 to 404 in 2024/25, an increase of 247 staff (+157%). YES, THAT'S A 157% INCREASE IN 4 YEARS! [2/8]

THE UNIVERSITY OF EXETER PLANS TO CUT NEAR 25% OF HASS ACADEMICS - BUT NEAR 25% OF ITS PAY COSTS ARISE FROM HIGHLY PAID MANAGERS WHO ARE EXEMPT FROM THE REDUNDANCIES In the last 5 yrs, the Exeter has been cutting costs to the bone while overseeing a vast increase in highly paid staff. [1/8]

John Heathershaw @jheathershaw.bsky.social · 24/06/2026
But one can say they are massively incentivising the voluntary redundancy scheme by indicating that life for those who survive will be much more work intensive and much less vibrant intellectually, with so much diversity lost.
030
John Heathershaw @jheathershaw.bsky.social · 24/06/2026
The net effect will be to narrow substantially the range of topics researched and taught across the university. This fits with managers' self vision of the university: massively increasing the number of deans etc while saying we cannot afford lecturers who actually do the teaching and research.
130
John Heathershaw @jheathershaw.bsky.social · 24/06/2026
That assumes the universities are more like corporations driven from the top by super managers rather than naturally decentralised places in which the best ideas come from the academics themselves. Our fields are so specialised they cannot be driven by management visions.

John Heathershaw @jheathershaw.bsky.social · 24/06/2026
Essentially they think that HASS is easier to teach and we should all be teaching much more. They want to change our teaching model and make us massive subsidisers of the bits of the university they regard as being appropriately expensive. It's based on poor data and lots of dubious assumptions.

John Heathershaw @jheathershaw.bsky.social · 24/06/2026
My university is cutting almost a 1/4 of academics in humanities and the social sciences. Despite what managers say, it's not about the money. They are using a national crisis born of 15 yrs of govt neglect as a pretext to make ideological moves against HASS fields. www.bbc.co.uk/news/article...
