Planning for October 2026
September was a mixed bag when it came to knocking items off my to-do lists. As often happens, some of that can be attributed to the items themselves being too ambitious. Really need to break my long-term objectives down to more realiztic bite-sized pieces. Especially since the university year is starting up and I'm going to be insanely busy between now and year's end.

There it is. We are not lacking in solutions; we are being denied access to them, because they aren't *profitable".
It's hard to grasp just how badly humanity is handicapping itself by excluding all solutions that can't generate a profit. There's a whole vast spectrum of potential solutions of troubles we face as a species, and we're limiting ourselves to a tiny, shitty fraction of it .

Concept: Klingons who get ahold of Tolkien really really vibe the Elves. Long lived warrior-poets facing the rise of man? Epic battles over honor and trinkets? Absolutely Klingons translating shit into Quenya and Sindarin.

Spent the day getting more #writing done - not quite finished with the current chapter, but getting close. Tomorrow is the first of October, and I'll need to do my planning for the month. At least my shots haven't been too bad today. May have escaped the worst of the reaction.

For the record, Jamal Campbell is just *insanely* talented. (Writer and artist for the current "Zatanna" run, artist for N. K. Jemisin's "Far Sector," a few other books I've read over the past few years. Great stuff.) #comicbooks

Reviewing the astrophysics course I'll be taking this year, I'm seeing some material that might have an impact on the putative second edition of "Architect of Worlds." Nothing to require major changes to the "Architect" model, which pleases me. Good to know I got things right. #worldbuilding

Had I not retired when I did, right now I would be searching through hundreds of pages of course material, replacing every mention of "artificial intelligence" with "super intelligence." That would still not have been the stupidest search-and-replace I had been forced to do over the past 20 months.

If you* overlay the old Chen & Kipping (2017) planet mass-radius relationship with the new Dransfield et al. (2026) relationship, you can really see the impact of removing the inflated planets! *ChatGPT.
A plot showing two mass-radius relationships; the new one is below (predicts smaller radii) the old one significantly, especially around Saturn-mass objects.

Got a little bit of #writing done today, but mostly I got some read-ahead work done for my astrophysics course. My left arm is already feeling pretty sore, so I'm expecting the next couple of days are going to be miserable and unproductive. At least I'll be getting a nice, robust immune response.

Just got back from having a bunch of booster and first-time-for-old-people shots. Now I get to see if I'm at all functional by tomorrow or Wednesday. Which is why I picked the week of no tai chi classes, and the week before my university courses start up in earnest.

My son and I went to see the Korean film “Hope” this morning. Not a bad movie, although I wasn’t expecting nearly that level of black comedy, to the point of absurdity, in my alien-invasion-horror flick.

Have to admit, I’m facing a writing quandary. The canonical course of events in the Star Trek universe, from about 2384 to 2387, is pretty dark. Which is going to make it hard to give the “Lower Decks” crew an upbeat trajectory in that era. At least I have plenty of time to think about a solution.

Been rewatching “Star Trek: Prodigy” lately. It’s interesting that the two most consistently high-quality shows of the modern Star Trek era were both animated, and one of them was explicitly for children. Not sure what that says about the future of the franchise, but it’s suggestive.

Any audiobook adaptation depends on the quality of the narrator. So it’s always good to find a really top-notch one. Current example: Mary Stewart’s Arthurian novels, starting with “The Crystal Cave.” Superb stories to begin with, but Derek Perkins makes them a joy to listen to. #books
