WOW. The ex-wife of the ICE officer who shot a 26-year-old Colombian man in Maine has come forward to say that he had mental health issues and was abusive in their relationship. She says after the shooting he called asking her to vouch for him — instead, she went to the press.
Ashley Brouillette told the Portland Press Herald in a phone interview Thursday afternoon that her ex-husband called admitting to the shooting and defending his actions. The Press Herald reviewed a screenshot of incoming calls Ashley Brouillette received from her ex-husband’s current wife’s Facebook account on Wednesday.

“He was asking me to lie for him and to cover for his character,” Ashley Brouillette said. “I told him that I was not going to lie for him. And then he tried to say that it was a justified shooting because the guy tried to hit him with his car.”

She said she has seen videos of Brouillette on the scene of the shooting and confirmed that was him on scene, telling him: “nowhere in there does it show that this man charged at you with a car.”

“In his head it’s justified. He’s unusually calm about it,” she said.Ashley Brouillette told a reporter that she wanted to speak publicly because she had previously reported concerns to his superiors in the military about his mental health. She said he was abusive in their relationship. She said that she’s been inundated with calls, since reports of Brouillette’s involvement began circulating online, threatening her and her family.

Heck, I bet Peter @notalawyer.bsky.social would even approve of Kelce county or Mahomes county :) Anyone but SCOTUS abomination Roger Taney. Someone in Missouri needs to get this legislation moving. Thank you! @piperformissouri.bsky.social this feels like a thread you would appreciate! :)

As far as I’m aware, Taney County Missouri may be one of the last entities in the country still paying honor to him. I think the good folks of Branson should think of a better name for that county — pay tribute to a Missourian who deserves it. How about Truman County? Kit Bond? Even John Ashcroft?

And here’s the kicker — Taney the Chief Justice was derided *in his own time* by his peers who rightly judged the Dred Scott decision to be terrible. In recent years, statues and busts of him have been removed from the US Capitol and the Maryland State House grounds. www.npr.org/2022/12/15/1...

As best I can tell, Taney the SCOTUS Chief Justice never visited Missouri. He became CJ in 1836 and Taney County (pronounced with a long A like stain, which he is) was incorporated the next year. That’s it. No good reason for it to be named after him. www.taneycounty.org/index.php?se...

Taney (which he pronounced with an “ah” sound, like fawn) lived his whole life in Maryland and never stepped foot in Missouri, AFAIK. As a native of Springfield who also attended college at Missouri State, and had many childhood trips to Silver Dollar City, I have many fond memories of SW Missouri.

Five-four is one of my favorite podcasts, as an armchair Supreme Court nerd, and they are doing a series on the worst SCOTUS decisions. Dred Scott is easily at the top of that list — and its indefensible ruling (that Black Americans can never be citizens) was authored by Chief Justice Roger Taney.

I had a student protest a grade in a class and allege religious discrimination in the process, and that earned an automatic bump to an EOO office investigation. I was cleared, and it didn’t become national news, but it was still super stressful. Departments & grad coordinators need to have plans.
