These people are Nazis. I know that's well-understood by many people at this point, but not enough. They are Nazis and we need to keep saying it.

When a cabinet member announces "We are using the military to liberate an American city from its elected leaders," where do you go from there. What is left to say. The idea of that being anything short of a near-universal "Wait, what the fuck is going on" moment proves how far we've backslid.

Every flashbang could instead be a meal for a poor kid. Every hotel room for a National Guardsman deployed to fire at our neighbors could house a homeless vet. Every "less-than-lethal" bullet pulled from a journalist's eye could be already needed healthcare for anyone else. All of this is a choice.

Years ago I went to one of their secret screening nights and saw Sorcerer for the first time with absolutely zero idea of what I was in for. Unhinged and unforgettable. I moved abroad a few years ago, and friends aside, this theater is probably what I miss most.

We Are Not Who They Think We Are: How Human Nature Matters In This Emergency
Rebecca Solnit

04 Feb 2025 — 10 min read
Welcome to the emergency--or rather Meditations in an Emergency, this newsletter, not the national emergency, which is of course very unwelcome. What's striking to me about all the things our morally and imaginatively impoverished billionaires, notably Musk and Trump, right now is: they do not expect or imagine or understand consequences. Any of them– their theory of change seems to be that they are going to do stuff and then it will be done. Like they're moving furniture around, like you and I and the trans and immigrant communities and federal workers and Canada and Mexico are just so many sofas and chairs that are going to sit where they place us. Like we're inanimate objects. Maybe everything is dead in the sad lonely worldview inside their head. Which would also explain their recalcitrance about climate and nature: if you see it as a collection of inert objects rather than an intricate living system in which what you do to any one part may affect the whole, you grant yourself more license to meddle. But today I'm here to talk about the human--and human nature, and how they misunderstand that too.

Ok here is the thing with action/praxis/protest/showing up: Sometimes you contribute by being a megaphone. Sometimes by being a wallet. Sometimes by being a physical body. Sometimes by being fuel or being relief. If you can’t be one thing at any given moment you can almost certainly be another.

At least some DOGE staffers have gained access to multiple sensitive internal systems, the people said, including a financial aid dataset that contains the personal information for millions of students enrolled in the federal student aid program.

To: ANDREA LUCAS
Cc: ADMINISTRATIVE JUDGES: +29 others
Good morning, Andrea. Apparently no one in leadership is willing to ring the alarm bells so it falls upon one of us to do it. The tactics you are employing and actions you have taken in lock step with this new administration are illegal and unconstitutional. You are not fit to be our chair much less hold a license to practice law. I will not participate in attempts to target private citizens and colleagues through the recent illegal executive orders. I swore an oath to the Constitution of the United States, and the Commission serves the people of the United States. If you want to continue following the illegal and unethical orders of our president and the unelected leader of "doge" that's on you.

As I said in the email I sent to my colleagues yesterday (which was mysteriously deleted not only from their inboxes, but from my sent box), I know I take a great personal risk in sending out this message. But, at the end of the day, my actions align with what the EEOC was charged with doing under the law. I will not compromise my ethics and my duty to uphold the law. I will not cower to bullying and intimidation.

If upon reflection, you feel like now would be a good time to take a vacation and resign from your position, please 'reply all' to this email and put "I'd Like to Occupy Mars!" in the subject line. We will take this as notification that you are resigning your position as acting chair.

P.S. Happy Black History Month!

Sincerely, [redacted]

The underlying assumption is that a person’s writing style is something to be divined only from what they’ve done in the past, rather than an evolving process that changes as you change as a person who experiences the world.

In the past day I’ve heard two people who really should know better say they asked ChatGPT for factual info. ChatGPT is not a search engine. It is predictive text based on other people’s stolen writing; its whole job is to make stuff up. Please do not ask it for facts. Tell a friend.

A British pensioner whose bland sandwiches gained him unexpected fame in China has died. Keith Brown, a retired engineer known on Chinese social media as
"Old Dry Keith", became a hit when his Chinese wife Zhang Jian began to post videos of him assembling the ham and cheese sandwiches he liked to eat. Chinese observers were grimly fascinated by his dry, boring sandwiches, and his gentle, stoic manner - and he built up a cult following. "We go from questioning the dry old man, to understanding the dry old man, to becoming the dry old man," observed one cultural commentator.
"The old man is us, and his dry lunch is our dry life."

Hey folks, a reminder: Don't use Gen ai. You can either afford an artist/stock art, or you can't. If you can't, you can make your own art/designs or abstain. Or you can cheaper your entire brand and communicate to your audience that you peddle low-effort garbage by using a plagiarism machine.

When you continue to be nice to someone who treats you like shit, you are sending them a message that they can treat you worse and get away with it. Biden is sending that message on behalf of everyone who voted for Democrats.

if you voted for trump, or excuse those who did, people in your orbit know you’re not safe. When the chips are down, you’ll sell out your loved ones and then retreat to your self-exonerating excuses. You already did it when the chips weren’t down. You’re unsafe, and dangerous times are coming. Bye.
