If you live in City Council District 1, Chris Marte does not deserve your vote. People against more buildings and affordable housing (for seniors, no less!) shouldn't represent Manhattan neighborhoods. Vote for @jesskcoleman.bsky.social, who will be excellent on housing.

Lower Manhattan has a choice: keep blocking new housing while rents skyrocket — or finally build a future where people can afford to stay. Grateful to @hellgatenyc.com for highlighting what’s at stake in this election. hellgatenyc.com/marte-colema...

It's YIMBY vs. NIMBY in Lower Manhattan's City Council Race
Incumbent Christopher Marte's anti-development positions have earned him some loyal fans—as well as challengers from the pro-growth movement within the Democratic Party.

Congestion pricing is working. It’s a massive win for NYC—and Democrats should be shouting it from the rooftops. Instead, many are silent. Some, like Chris Marte, are actively fighting it. Why are we ducking the fight? My latest for @newrepublic.com: newrepublic.com/article/1951...

Housing’s out of reach. Hate crimes are rising. Our rights are under attack. LGBTQ New Yorkers are on the front lines—and too often ignored by people in power. Proud to have @SDNYC in my corner as we fight for real progress—not more empty promises.

Lower Manhattan has the highest storefront vacancy rate in NYC. Giving up a few parking spaces—for just a handful of hours every week—in exchange for a vibrant public space that benefits residents and small businesses is a no-brainer. Good work, CB3!

Open NY is what the NIMBY right has feared all along: a young, people-powered movement fighting for housing justice w/o any reliance on special interests. Can't wait to fight alongside them to lower your rent and make your neighborhood thrive.

You don’t get to choose who has rights or when they matter. That’s kinda the whole point. If the government can detain a permanent resident without due process today, they can do it to you tomorrow. This isn’t complicated.

Incoherent word salad from @nywfp.bsky.social in trying to justify their endorsement of arch-NIMBY Chris Marte. Actual progressives should ignore this endorsement. www.cityandstateny.com/politics/202...
It’s that logic that may make the WFP’s decision to endorse Council Member Chris Marte puzzling to some, as the lawmaker has gotten heat from housing advocates in the district and opposed the City of Yes housing plan last year. Asked about those YIMBY critiques, Archila said, “Sometimes these fights are actually really hard fights – we live in a blue city, but it's not blue for the issues that matter to the poorest New Yorkers. Sometimes the poorest New Yorkers actually have the hardest time getting their voices heard, and it is notable that despite the opposition … he has (waded) into these difficult waters with a lot of commitment, and that is a remarkable sort of leadership quality.”

While Paris is replacing parking spaces with trees, NYC will soon replace thousands of outdoor dining locations with parking spaces. It’s really disheartening to watch NYC abandon its role as the global leader in urbanism.

No policy is perfect, but at a time when urban progressive governance is under extreme attack, what message does it send that *New York City,* the largest, densest city in the country, can't even get rid of parking mandates during a historic housing crisis?

Jess Coleman @jesskcoleman.bsky.social · 19/11/2024
This should send chills up everyone's spine. One of the most popular news programs in the country giving favorable news coverage to the incoming president out of fear they'll be sued if they don't. Hard to call this any other than stone-cold authoritarianism in action.

Jess Coleman @jesskcoleman.bsky.social · 19/11/2024
I've said it before and I'll say it again: congestion pricing is the rare policy that will provide immediate, tangible benefits to everyone involved (including drivers). It will soon be a very popular policy and future generations will be shocked at the amount of wrangling over a simple toll.

A new study from @NYC_DOT finds that reopening Park Row in Lower Manhattan to cars would add *more traffic overall* to Chinatown. This phenomenon, induced demand, is the most important concept in transportation policy but is so often misunderstood by politicians. @streetsblognyc.bsky.social

Sorry, @hakeemjeffries.bsky.social, Trump’s cabinet is not a distraction, and the public has a right to the Gaetz report even if Republicans on the Ethics Committee decide to be partisan, and cover up a child sex trafficking scandal.

There's a lot of talk about tangible steps progressives can take to restore faith in government, so for my first @bsky.app post, I want to talk about urban governance, and specifically the failure of local leaders to invest in tangible, people-centric solutions. Bear with me. 🧵
