I will bang this drum forever: in THEY THOUGHT THEY WERE FREE: THE GERMANS, 1933-45 Milton Mayer interviewed 10 ordinary Germans after WW2 to learn how fascism took hold. There was never a moment when everyone woke up:

A fellow academic tells Mayer:

“But the one great shocking occasion, when tens or hundreds or thousands will join with you, never comes. That’s the difficulty. If the last and worst act of the whole regime had come immediately after the first and smallest, thousands, yes, millions would have been sufficiently shocked—if, let us say, the gassing of the Jews in ’43 had come immediately after the ‘German Firm’ stickers on the windows of non-Jewish shops in ’33. Tested positive for Flu A last night after 4 hours (3 more to go) in a tattoo chair for my first tattoo with my sister…. I thought I had a chest cold that I was through the worst of. I masked, checked in with the artist and felt good and then my sugar suddenly dropped and wouldn’t come up.

My sister is here visiting with my nephew and brother in law and they always stay with my grandma. I’ve been super happy seeing them but it’s been hard being around family with big differences of opinions politically. The topic of vaccines came up and I’m telling you I rolled my eyes soooo hard.

Trump’s first big bold thing is to slap tariffs on our three biggest trading partners. We import oil and lumber from Canada, fresh produce from Mexico, consumer goods from China. Prices will soar as the import tax is passed on to U.S. consumers. This is madness.

I’m starting to think that the longer we shield Trump voters from the worst economic outcomes, the worse things actually will get. Sometimes people just have to find out the hard way, sad as that is. Yes, we will suffer. But at least they will learn that elections do have consequences.

The grieving is big, broad and different amongst us… so many of my queer siblings and allied friends don’t have a clue what we your siblings of color are grieving. A good portion of my latiné family voted for him… all just a generation removed from immigrating here… it makes literally no sense.
