Summer is always tricky, and August is trickiest. I got to see Tedeschi Trucks Band at a winery in Woodinville last week, with Lukas Nelson opening . Next week or approximately then, we're heading to Anaheim for Worldcom and I hope that will result in meeting up with Ann. I hope. Somehow.

I am in an extraordinarily good mood today. Last night just before sunset I saw motion in the climbing rose outside the study window and turne, expecting to see another damned squirrel, or, worse, a hell-sent vole, and it was a young long-tailed weasel. Nature gave me an ally, finally!

I finally made it out to Luhr Beach at low tide. This pair of #Birds treated me like "oh, you again" and went about the business of satiating their insatiable chicks. (Purple Martins, Nisqually Reach).

Dark blue satiny short-billed, short legged bird perches at the entrance of a high-tech plastic nest box.

Please note: the bird from the previous photo is also in this one; his shining eye and beak are in the door. I assume the grey-throated bird flashing her gleaming blue-violet back at us is his wife. They are residents of nest box B-6

I am not sure where everyone is right now, nor how much uninterrupted time I'll have. (At this point DIL walked in and assumed I'd take the baby without hesitation...) Here, this is how far I've made it planting the container mountain this year, at least from one side.

Disappointed, though not surprised, I began to describe various life- saving components of USAID’s global health portfolio, highlighting how we prepare for and respond to emerging pandemic threats; support the diagnosis and treatment of tuberculosis, malaria, and HIV; and immunize millions of children from the deadliest childhood diseases. I spoke for about five minutes, focusing primarily on our infectious diseases work and hoping to keep the attention of people who seemed to have no experience—or interest—in global health.

When I finished, the room was silent, the political appointees looking at one another in what appeared to be disbelief. The silence was broken by Ken Jackson, who chuckled softly and shook his head. “Wow, there really is so much that USAID does that we never knew,” he said. “This is the story that needs to get out there.”

Joel, also smiling, chimed in next, echoing Jackson’s amazement. “I had no idea you did all this,” he said. “As a Republican, when I think of what USAID does in global health, I assumed it was just, you know, abortions.”

More spring scenes. Today we slogged up to the south field where the cows are calving, as I did when my son was his daughter's age. I tried to get Beatrice to pose against one of the pasture oaks (Quercus garryana) but she has no patience with being told what to do.

Farm scene. About half the cows- 3 roan and 1 white shorthorns and one blue angus/shorthorn, two white shorthorn babies and a black 3/4 shorthorn 1/4 angus. The grass is exceptionally green and lush for March.

Two other Farm bablies playing hide and seek around an oak tree (the one straight back from the calves in the first picture) A 2YO toddler girl with bedraggled ringlets, wearing a jean jacket, a floral dress striped pants and Bluey boots with my eldest behind the tree in jeans and a black Tshirt.

There was a brief period this afternoon, when my son was back from a PT consult and his wife had a gap in her second work day after maternity leave and I was therefore off being-sat-on-by-babies duty. And after spring began with cold rain, it was suddenly spring in full. #Flowers

Yesterday, I was startled by a Chinook refueler overflying my house. After February being wall-to-wall artillary and choppers in the air, a week ago today the air was quiet. 70-odd years next to Fort Lewis, McCord AFB and then JBLM has taught me to hate that.

I became devoted to the Brooks Falls Bears in 2016, when I kept the main falls feed running muted on my desktop and when Trump started whine/rumbling I turned the falls on loud. Later, I bought a new remote.
