People call the tech job market "brutal." It's normalizing. 2020–22 was an anomaly—zero rates + COVID let many get hired with simple JS demos. Now higher rates and big tech shifts corrected that. It's a filter. If you survived the Javascript framework days, this is nothing. Stick and move.

One of the most exhausting things about this moment is how many articles and takes I have to see by white people on their opinions about technology but formatted as pronouncements. Not really a judgment of them, some people make their living being pundits. But lord, it’s so boring.

As a person who is a writer and a thinker first, who always liked thinking about the problem and solution more than the code, spending more time on issues and reviews is fine with me. I think the people complaining are people that this is the only thing they have been good at.

The question is I get all the time is " How do I break into tech?" And its only one piece of advice that I give that I know works pretty much all the time, but its also the one piece of advice people won't do. That's build something substantial.

Gotta say, not a fan of stacked PRs as of right now.having to rebase every time a branch gets merged is no fun at all.

Right now, 80% of AI engineering education is useless for the everyday developer. It’s mostly taught by DevRels from frontier labs marketing their tools or engineers working in Fortune 50 in tech companies that are operating in "sweetheart scenarios."

Here's the thing about SEO: the way to get ranked is to have reputable people link to you. That's it, that's the whole thing. Everything else is snake oil being sold by people who are trying to game an algorithm that is constantly being changed to nullify their efforts.

For most of us, seeing the Klan 2.0, a.k.a. Patriot Front, march through Washington, D.C., unchallenged by authorities overshadowed any celebration of America’s 250th anniversary. My ancestors lived through this. And no one today can say with a straight face that racism is behind us.

I am loving that companies are moving towards community curation as a metric and I foresee that its only gonna get bigger over the next two-three years. They no longer want access to your 10,000+ community with 80% of them are duds, but the small curated ones with rockstars.

People who know me know I’m very anti-community in tech because it’s pretty much become sheep herding where someone is trying to get people to join a newsletter, substack, go to a conference, etc. It’s no longer about skills and talent. So the solo economy coming to tech hiring is awesome IMO.

Jerome Hardaway @jeromehardaway.bsky.social · 26/06/2026
One of the things I’m very excited to start seeing is the solo economy coming to tech hiring. For the last couple of years it’s been the community people being a part of the process but most of them aren’t in the biz so they can’t tell a rockstar from a rock.

While not a fan of Sam Altman I understand the problem he had to solve on the NPO side intimately. High Value/ Low Community nonprofits are the hardest NPOs to build and create cause most people don’t get the feels when donating.

3 myths keeping veterans out of AI engineering: 1. "You need a math background." I have a police science background. 2. "It takes years." Seniors can transition within a year. 3. "The market is saturated." It's starving for people who show they can ship.

I have this theory about timing in AI engineering: The window where "I just pivoted into this" is still an acceptable answer in interviews is closing. Not closed. Closing. In 2024 it was wide open. In 2026 it's narrowing. In 2028 it will be mostly shut. Every month you wait, the bar moves up.
