People call the tech job market "brutal." It's normalizing. 2020–22 was an anomaly—zero rates + COVID let many get hired with simple JS demos. Now higher rates and big tech shifts corrected that. It's a filter. If you survived the Javascript framework days, this is nothing. Stick and move.

One of the most exhausting things about this moment is how many articles and takes I have to see by white people on their opinions about technology but formatted as pronouncements. Not really a judgment of them, some people make their living being pundits. But lord, it’s so boring.

Oh that’s simply not true. AI can not help build a business in a day, there are too many parameters. I swear this has been settled law.

For me, AI has made it easier to do all the parts of business I didn't focus on. I spent most of the last eight years not using my marketing background due to focusing on being a strong engineer. Now I am doing more business-related work that non-coding donors and customers care about.

As a person who is a writer and a thinker first, who always liked thinking about the problem and solution more than the code, spending more time on issues and reviews is fine with me. I think the people complaining are people that this is the only thing they have been good at.

So my advice will always be build something robust, get feedback and repeat. It is always a builders market.

Hell, I got to spend two hours pairing on Physical AI with the CAIO of Panasonic Group in Japan because of my "side project". You ever wrote code with someone who's company revenue is larger than your city's revenue? Its pretty wild.

It hasn't been easy, nothing is, but you know how many jobs, contracts, and opportunities that have gotten because of this? Its not a small number.

Its been a lot of work, but I have learned a lot that always transitions in some way to my work life and recently everything has transitioned from what I have learned at VWC to my job.

My only project, my entire tech career has been @VetsWhoCode and that has helped me get every job and contract I have made money on, and I've gotten to help a lot of people along the way and make a positive change. I did not intend for that to happen, it just did, cause I kept building.

90% of the project out there are piddly pieces of shit, that's just being honest. Build a thing that takes you through the entire SDLC, along with the AI SLDC, add the free tools, learn them, get feedback and continue to build. Make it like an actual product.

The question is I get all the time is " How do I break into tech?" And its only one piece of advice that I give that I know works pretty much all the time, but its also the one piece of advice people won't do. That's build something substantial.

Right now, 80% of AI engineering education is useless for the everyday developer. It’s mostly taught by DevRels from frontier labs marketing their tools or engineers working in Fortune 50 in tech companies that are operating in "sweetheart scenarios."

Here's the thing about SEO: the way to get ranked is to have reputable people link to you. That's it, that's the whole thing. Everything else is snake oil being sold by people who are trying to game an algorithm that is constantly being changed to nullify their efforts.

For most of us, seeing the Klan 2.0, a.k.a. Patriot Front, march through Washington, D.C., unchallenged by authorities overshadowed any celebration of America’s 250th anniversary. My ancestors lived through this. And no one today can say with a straight face that racism is behind us.

I am loving that companies are moving towards community curation as a metric and I foresee that its only gonna get bigger over the next two-three years. They no longer want access to your 10,000+ community with 80% of them are duds, but the small curated ones with rockstars.

Yes so people who focus on curating high-level connections that can be better heavily will have more value than those who are community drivers.

People who know me know I’m very anti-community in tech because it’s pretty much become sheep herding where someone is trying to get people to join a newsletter, substack, go to a conference, etc. It’s no longer about skills and talent. So the solo economy coming to tech hiring is awesome IMO.

One of the things I’m very excited to start seeing is the solo economy coming to tech hiring. For the last couple of years it’s been the community people being a part of the process but most of them aren’t in the biz so they can’t tell a rockstar from a rock.

We see this even when you break it down to same served communities. Work Force Development VSO’s are not treated with the same love that social services VSO’s are and they tend to rely more on gov assistance.

While not a fan of Sam Altman I understand the problem he had to solve on the NPO side intimately. High Value/ Low Community nonprofits are the hardest NPOs to build and create cause most people don’t get the feels when donating.
