Only silver lining is that Trump has done this all in such an offensively cartoonish way that it’ll be very easy for Democrats to gather the political capital needed to undo most of this later on. The long-term danger is in a more sharpened Trump-like Republican who’ll keep voters in line better.

Between this and the excellent Nikole Hannah-Jones NYT piece on how NYC public school educators are failing Black kids (in the deeper way), this has been a big week for speaking truths long forbidden in progressive circles. It’s encouraging!

hilarious and insane article. full of the sorts of people you meet all the time in left activism, who combine neuroticism and narcissism to bring down any institution they're allowed into.

I think if you care about the welfare of trans people in America you should desperately want to see Democrats in control of the US House and especially the US Senate. I think the profound benefit to trans people should outweigh the frustration of voting for a Democrat you opposed in the primary.

That so many people are willing to defend a literal murderer who engaged in a targeted act of political violence has me concerned once again about our country's stability. This is about Luigi Mangione.

BOYHOOD is a masterpiece, a quiet magic trick that breaks my heart every time I watch it. I showed it to both of my sons on their 18th birthdays, and those experiences were so emotionally powerful. Linklater is truly our best director about time and how it changes us.

Here's a sightseeing bus for tourists in New York City in 1904.
Edwardians in dresses, suits, and flat straw or feathered caps sit on a sightseeing bus in New York City in 1904. Walt Whitman would have been dead, so we can confirm he wasn't bothering his fellow bus riders by declaiming Shakespeare aloud, as he was wont to do.

Under President Trump's leadership, we are on a path toward unprecedented economic growth, lasting dollar dominance, and fiscal strength and stability. There is no more powerful way to recognize the historic achievements of our great country and President Donald J. Trump than U.S dollar bills bearing his signature, and it is only appropriate that this historic currency be issued at the Semiquincentennial.

Yes, it’s indeed a game-changing night for NY politics. But no matter who had won, it had come down to: Turnout of probably less than 10% of each district, because most people don't give a shit about any of this. And that’s really bleak.

Fighting this just feels exhausting. I went for a short walk around my neighborhood in Brooklyn yesterday. And the number of delis and restaurants they now have AI posters up in the windows has skyrocketed this year. It’s all over every social media platform. We’ve lost the war against slop.

⌨️ cornellians_only - Cornell has launched an investigation into an Industrial & Labor Relations student after an antisemitic message he sent on the career platform Handshake went viral online. Austin Franco rejected an interview offer by explicitly stating he was not interested in working for a Jew
Close-up portrait of a young man with short brown hair and brown eyes, smiling. Overlaid text reads: "NEWS CORNELL INVESTIGATING ANTISEMITIC STUDENT Austin Franco allegedly 'Not interested in working for a jew'".Screenshot of a tweet about a job application rejection due to antisemitism. The tweet reads, "“Not interested in working for a jew” This kid applied to our job on handshake, we accepted him, and then he responded this. He probably knows nothing about Jews accept for what they tell him in college and on social media. Sad world." Below the tweet is a screenshot of a mobile notification from Handshake, reading, "You have a new notification Hello Aiden, You have a new message from Austin (Cornell University) Not interested in working for a jew. Thanks.""I was stating why I was not interested after you had asked to interview 3 times. I found out you were Jewish after the fact. My experiences with Jews have not been pleasant, both in person and online. This is not to say I haven't had positive experiences, but on the aggregate that is not the case. Obviously, the reactions by your community only serves to further prove my point and indicate your post on X was not done in good faith. I am sure that if you indicated you didn't want to work for someone who was white or Christian this would not have blown up to the capacity it has here today nor would you have been intimated as I have been."A statement from Cornell University regarding an unconfirmed report of a post made by a student on the Handshake platform. The statement reads: "Cornell University is aware of an unconfirmed report regarding a post made by a student on the Handshake platform. We take all reports of discrimination and hate speech seriously and are actively reviewing the matter. We are committed to conducting a thorough review in accordance with university policy. Cornell condemns antisemitism and all forms of hatred and discrimination in the strongest possible terms. Our university remains deeply committed to fostering a safe, inclusive, and respectful environment for every member of our community."

And somehow has gotten really really bad in just the past year. AI certainly an issue there. But this is nearly every corner of the ideological spectrum now, and people are increasingly hysterical about it all. Maybe it’s post-Covid, maybe it’s Trump, online brain rot, or any combo, but… ooof.

Of all the dumb ideas the Trump WH has floated, this is in the top 5 easily. This would essentially end most international travel in and out of the country. MAGA is determined to turn the US into a hermit kingdom, ruled by one diminishing man.

Saw someone this morning saying the MTA are villains because they won’t pay LIRR workers a fair wage. I don’t think most people understand what they’re already paid. These are not abused factory workers during the industrial revolution. I love LIRR, but they are borderline upper middle class.

Yesterday I had another opportunity to visit Hart Island, just off the Bronx coast. It’s the city’s public burial ground. Burials include individuals who were not claimed by families or did not have private funerals; the homeless; and mass burials of disease victims (such as AIDS and Covid).

“where they shout at one another” That’s a key part of the failed growth. But the truth is that making any social media platform worthwhile involves heavily curating one’s feed, while also keeping an eye out for new follows. But angry misanthropes are everywhere.
