This is white nationalist agenda stuff. Elevating tiny problems into headline scare tactics about foreign nationals in the US and diverting money from existing programs to pursue people for their otherness is not the kind of policy you get from a functioning democratic regime.

Shockingly, this is not illegal. This self-dealing results from: - Electing a business profiteer rather than a politician to the presidency. - Failure to write anti-corruption norms into the statutes. - Putting people with no moral values or commitment to public service into positions of authority.

I'm not sure folks understand how many people live in Los Angeles County. Nearly 10 million people live there. Its population is larger than 40 US states. Trump did not say LA on accident.

It occurs to me...in a true constitutional crisis—where one branch of government instructs another branch to do something and the order is ignored—only one branch of government has an actual army to enforce its orders. (Juan Linz was right.)

1. Pass the reforms that would revitalize the party system and generate more parties. But this requires people in power, who have benefited from the status quo, to agree to change it. 6/8

But this isn’t ideal because parties are essential tools for solving complex political problems. Our parties can’t. They’re broken. We’re stuck hating them, but supporting their candidates because there’s no where else to go. It seems to me there are two ways out. 5/8

Third, we have electoral laws that prevent alternative parties from forming. We’re stuck in the two party “doom loop” @leedrutman.bsky.social until we pass laws like multimember districts and proportional representation. We tend to support candidates and ideas, not parties. 4/8

How can people hate parties so much while also holding their partisan identity so strongly? Are we self-loathing? Maybe. I think it’s three things happening simultaneously. First, we have dysfunctional party organizations operating in a system that ties their hands from being truly powerful. 2/8

The puzzle of our time: political parties are grossly unpopular—a voter in this story compares them to shit and diarrhea. This mayoral candidate runs against her party with the slogan “Paige against the machine.” But, partisan identity explains most voting. 1/8 www.washingtonsun.com/campaigns/co...

This aligns exactly with what we know about noncitizen voting; it is extremely rare (9 noncitizen votes in MN out of 3,253,920 in the 2024 election, or 0.0002%), and when it occurs it’s most often green card holders who were mistakenly told they could vote (none of these people are undocumented).

Yes! Thank you. I knew I hadn't come up with this idea, but I didn't have that label handy. I think it applies well to political prediction markets. Although this is a testable hypothesis that we will unwittingly see tested over the next months/years.

Prediction markets are to 2026 what candidate endorsements were to 2012. When only a few people understood they were useful signals, they were predictive; but once everyone realized they were useful signals, they stopped being useful. Once everyone is behind the curtain, there is no more magic.
