Today’s pointless but highly satisfying activity. Those are tiny daily bushes. Before and after. The maple pots are now in a sheltered place until autumn.

New book from David Lindenmayer et al on those big old trees that grace our paddocks. pearlsandirritations.com/post/2026/10...

Australia’s ‘useless’ paddock trees are anything but
Large old paddock trees provide shade, shelter, habitat and cultural value across rural Australia. Yet they are disappearing faster than new generations are being established.

so apparently FitBit/Google think that not recording cycling and swimming as "steps" is a feature not a bug. So I can't even get my money back. Currently transferring $15 to a dude off Facebook to get a lightly used old Flex2. :/

Oh God the admin and burden of proof. Cannot face it. I’m probably just going to manually log every damn swim from here until an upgrade. I have 10 years of data on Fitbit, now Google Health, and I don’t want a tracker with a screen. May look for a secondhand Fiex2.

Old Fitbit died. Lasted 8 years so fair. New Fitbit Air refuses to log swims. So that was an utter waste of $199. Checked Reddit: it’s a thing apparently.

love that Fitbit are now marketing old-fashioned screen free devices as some sort of upgrade: "While smaller, lighter and more discreet than any previous Fitbit, the biggest difference between the Google Fitbit Air and other Fitbit trackers is that there’s no screen."

Can AI be given a conscience?
Anthropic has tried to give Claude a moral compass, acknowledging that soon, AI may make more decisions on our behalf. So whose idea of right and wrong will be guiding those decisions?
