Notice DOJ doesn't talk about its efforts to obtain state voter files anymore. They are 0-20 in those cases and today is the beginning of the quiet period -- states can no longer do systematic removals of names from the voter rolls. TLDR: We won!🥳

Good-faith concern on this issue would be going, "hmm, professional sports leagues should probably have some standards in place to ensure trans competitors aren't getting an unfair advantage," googling for 5 minutes, realizing every sports league already has those standards and dropping it.

Another option would be that it’s an utterance that will carry different implicatures for different people due to their background assumptions. At one time I might have called that a dogwhistle but now I am not so sure.
020
Jenny Saul @jennysaul.bsky.social · 05/02/2026
Ok then I think it may be a dogwhistle. Though I wonder if it’s conventionalised enough.
120
Jenny Saul @jennysaul.bsky.social · 04/02/2026
This thought is why I don't think 'religious freedom' and 'protest women' are anti-trans dogwhistles. Those are (usually) said by people openly making an argument that widely accepted values have anti-trans consequences.
120
Jenny Saul @jennysaul.bsky.social · 04/02/2026
I'm not certain that's what he's doing: he might also be calling upon a widely accepted value (privacy) to make a pro-trans argument, without any effort to conceal.
120
Jenny Saul @jennysaul.bsky.social · 04/02/2026
To be a dogwhistle, 'invading student privacy' would need to be a conventionalized way of communicating 'I'm pro-trans' to some people while other people fail to realize this.

Jenny Saul @jennysaul.bsky.social · 01/02/2026
I like it but I’m uncertain it’s a dogwhistle….

The coordinated nature of this—none are facing voters in 2026—means that either Schumer approved it or failed in his job as Senate Majority Leader to stop it. Dems voting "no" get zero credit until they demand a change in leadership. Schumer out as Leader, Durbin out as Whip.
