Final preparations for Weird Modernisms today, & thankful for the wonderful people still using the internet to make archive materials accessible. I'll be able to play some rare audio of Ann Quin reading from her 1966 novel, Three, and talk about her immense reading/recommendation list, 'Quinology'.
A yellowed, typewritten page with handwritten corrections and additions in biro and pencil. The first of Ann Quin's four-page reading/recommendation list, 'Quinology', courtesy of Larry Goodell. Authors listed include Virginia Woolf, D. H. Lawrence, Marlowe, Tennyson, Proust, Camus, Kafka, Beckett, Ibsen, Djuna Barnes, Brecht, Bronte and Rimbaud...

today's #ModWrite is a trawl through Evelyn Waugh's letters - a deluge of nicknames & tall tales, but peppered with wonderful BBC barbs. My favourite - B.B.C.L.S.D.N.B.G.E.W [BBC's Pounds, Shillings & Pence No Bloody Good, Evelyn Waugh]
Transcript of a postcard from Evelyn Waugh, 4 November 1934. The text reads 'B.B.C.L.S.D.N.B.G' signed 'E.W.'. The note translates to 'BBC's Pounds Shillings and Pence No Bloody Good'.

Er... so, happy 248th anniversary to this entirely bizarre diary entry from Parson Woodforde
23 March 1778 – I breakfasted, and slept again at home. Memorandum. In shaving my face this morning I happened to cut one of my moles which bled much, and happening also to kill a small moth that was flying about, I applied it to my mole and it instantly stopped the bleeding.

for today's #ModWrite I'm working on the relationship between radio and TV drama, and celebrating this exacting request hidden in the props lists for the BBC's 1967 production of Pinter's A Night Out. Verisimilitude is key, and cheese rolls *must* be soft.
A typed list of props - under the heading 'Notes', the first item reads 'Increase Item 49 to 12 cheese rolls. These must be of the large, round, soft variety - not brittle BBC models.'
