Today we dropped into “Uncanny Encounters in Asian Modernisms”, an invigorating panel with talks ranging from exoticized premodern Japan, to sound in Woolf and Bae Suah, to Chinatowns in (post)colonial Singapore. The panel asks: What can “Asian modernisms” mean? Where does it wobble? #WeirdModernisms

We're delighted to share an opportunity to contribute to a Special Issue of Modernist Cultures, edited by @rsazzad.bsky.social. If you're interested in contributing an article, please email rehnuma.sazzad@yahoo.co.uk with a 250-word abstract (with 5 keywords) and a 100-word bio, by 31 August!
Global Modernism: Historical Representations, Diasporic Movements, and Space as Constituents

The Special Issue points to a complex understanding of modernism that moves beyond a Eurocentric canon. It suggests that the three elements above are significant building blocks –constituents – of what we now call Global Modernism (see Jaillant and Martin 2018). Expanding on the aesthetic experiments of pioneering figures like Pablo Picasso, James Joyce, and Franz Kafka, Global Modernism presents a critical framework for recognizing the modernist movements that emerged across the globe (in Latin America, Asia, Africa, and the Caribbean, for example). Situating the experience of modernity outside the West, the framework highlights a compressed time that witnessed not only violent (anti-colonial) upheavals, colonialism, and rapid industrialization, but also the birth of equally powerful modernist expressions. The Special Issue aims to highlight the richness of these expressions by tracing the following aspects:
Historical Representations: In Global Modernism, history is always not a linear progression toward a European ideal. Instead, it is a contested site challenging colonial narratives and forging new identities. Articles addressing historical representations in Global Modernism will demonstrate how this is an active, often polemical, process of recovering, reinterpreting, and formally experimenting with the past to make sense of a disruptive present. The articles will reflect the difficulty of processing a violent/colonial past through traditional and coherent storytelling.
Diasporic Movements: Articles in this section will highlight that he forced and voluntary movements of people are not just background contexts; they are generative forces that shape modernist form and content. For instance, Paul Gilroy’s concept of the ‘Black Atlantic’ is a content that posits the ocean not as a barrier, but as a conduit that created a transnational and intercultural modernism. The cir…

for today's #ModWrite I'm digging around in the archives for some work on Evelyn Waugh and radio, and enjoying the number of times Waugh sent the BBC one of these pre-printed rejection postcards.
A printed postcard, with the text 'Mr. Evelyn Waugh greatly regrets that he cannot do what you so kindly suggest'.
