#NIH will eliminate clinical trials for K awards starting October 2027. Again, there are troubles with training clinical trialists. That doesn't mean eliminate the program. It means support trainees to the fullest extent possible. Read the statement from @asa-scipol.bsky.social.

Russell Vought wants to be in charge of #ScienceDeathPanels at NIH. Congress has made it pretty clear they don’t want political appointees in charge of funding decisions. Science community: it’s time to get loud (again)! www.politico.com/news/2026/09...

Trump asked budget chief to draft order bringing health research funding under his control
The move came after the NIH director refused Trump’s request to cut Harvard grants in an Oval Office meeting.

hopefully the next democratic government will review and remove all these cranks. The amount of unqualified individuals in such critical positions that shape health is disheartening.

Lots of stories across Pennsylvania about NIH grant terminations at Pitt and Penn. This is why speaking out matters. Even Congress critters who generally support the administration get pressured into actually supporting their constituents. www.wesanews.org/health-scien...

From @markhisted.org:
The American scientific superpower … is built on public funding,” Mark Histed, chief of the unit on neural computation at the National Institute of Mental Health, told The Transmitter, speaking in his personal capacity and not as a representative of the institute. “That is why the U.S. has been a talent magnet for the whole globe—because of public investment, and that public investment is what’s under threat … There is great damage being done to science, and the public is looking to scientists to talk about not just what is happening, but why.”

I thought that your favored approach to public health was protecting the vulnerable. Who is more vulnerable than children who are too young to be vaccinated for a disease where the risk of hospitalization and death is highest in young children? The question, as you well know, is how were these children exposed to the measles virus and the answer to that appears to be unvaccinated adults.

Governor Shapiro was not "playing this out over the airwaves" for political reasons. He was encouraging the citizens of the Commonwealth to get vaccinated against a highly contagious and occasionally serious disease. In other words, he was acting as a public official, responsible for public health, should.

Perhaps you should try it sometime.

Sincerely,

Jeremy M. Berg

A great explainer about a proposal to hide NIH peer review scores from applicants and program officers, why NIH’s justification makes no sense, why it could lead to (further) politicization of science, and how to leave a public comment 27unihted.substack.com/p/nih-wants-...

A friend shared this photo from outside an NIH building this morning. The signs refer to four former NIAID staff members who were recently forced out. 2 are retiring and 2 have been reassigned to the National Institute of Minority Health and Health Disparities. A travesty and 🙏 for their service.
