Two of our science managers were busy last week answering questions from almost 400 students in I'm a Scientist chats for British Science Week, from year 4s curious about the 3Rs to year 11s asking how we can replace animals in research. Here's an example of how we explain 3Rs to school students 👇

A school student asks 'Could you explain your work in a simpler term? I want to learn more about your work'. An NC3Rs staff member replies 'Of course! Thank you for asking! I work for the NC3Rs, which is an organisation set up to help scientists replace, reduce or refine the use of animals in research. Replacing animals looks to find alternatives, such as using human cells or computational models. Reducing animals means making sure only the necessary number are used by designing experiments well. And refinement means making sure animal welfare is as high standard as possible. And this includes things like how they are housed and handled.'

Chronic fatigue/idiopathic hypersomnia is such a lonely diagnosis, especially in academia. Currently trying to explain to a colleague why I didn’t respond to their time-sensitive email sooner (I was asleep for 21 hours straight) and there just…aren’t the right words.

I had to make these graphics for a graduate student who is nervous about their publication count and feels they are not doing enough work. They have over 400 hours of ethnographic data which is supporting at least 5 publications. 🫠

How people think Papers happen: 3 sequential blocks for 3 papers, under which are the steps of research, analyze, write, and publish.

How papers actually happen: 3 seperate sequences each starting and ending at different times, with different lengths of time for the phases of research, analysis, writing, submitting, revising, and publishing.
