"In reality" "what it actually means" "in the American context" If you equivocate three times before claiming to know something, no one can prove you wrong. You didn't really say it. Classic Atlas Shrugged framing! ...if you're the villain.

Where that exact point is, is a debatable thing. That there is such a point, is not.

I think there’s a good chance we’ve already passed the point at which the Computer maximally advanced human flourishing, and we’re on the downward-sloping curve where more Computer = less human flourishing.

If you’re not prepared to concede in advance that there is at least a possibility of a world in which there is simply too much Computer for optimum human flourishing, then I won’t debate you; I’ll mock you.

It's telling that men would rather try to invent tech to replace humans' role in caregiving than step up as equal partners in parenting. Telling, that is, in that it shows how financial capitalism and patriarchy work together to dissuade men from doing "unprofitable" labor, like the work of care.

Once upon a time, brokenhearted, I threw away literal reams of letters from my first true love, who saw me in a way no one else could ever match. (Which is not to say that I never loved or was loved again.) But today I happened upon a note I'd missed at just the right moment, and the impact is...

🙃 Three times by page 40.🙄 I don't know what it's like to read without noticing these patterns. It's definitely behind my early degree/career choices, and I recognize "myriad" is my pet peeve, not an absolute. But...does phrase repetition *not* annoy most readers? Oof.

Jen Gingras Harper @jengingras.bsky.social · 02/10/2026
I may be able to forgive an author for misusing "myriad," but authors who misuse it twice within 3 pages are why I don't read physical books in front of an open fire. The content of Meggan Watterson's "The Girl Who Baptized Herself" is worth it, but the editing is trying my soul. 🙄 #booksky

I will never not smile when I crest the hill on my road that presents the first view of our valley. There is no season in which it doesn't look like a postcard. And I will never take home for granted again.

A truly heinous man has doxxed the Cornell victim on X and the comments are predictably vile. Based on countless interviews I’ve done with survivors, the trauma they are subjected to for coming forward is oftentimes even worse than the initial trauma they experienced. There is no real justice system

I grew up next to Middlebury College, which banned single-sex frats in 1991. By the time I was in college, I avoided/ignored the Greek system. 😒 There's precedent for killing this toxic tradition, is what I'm saying.

Tan, sprawling Dublin, with giant beehives we call condos. 🙄 Raising my kids in Oakland, we'd occasionally drive back to the valley to see a friend. One day: "Mama...what state are we in?" "We're still in California." "...are you sure?"

this is the rape culture btw. the one women have been warning you about, and were told we were hysterical and over-sensitive and couldn't take a joke, and that rape allegations ruin men's lives, and now we live in a meritocracy where the only "merit" is who has hurt the most women

This reminds me of a jackass who tried to make me identify as a redneck because I'm a Vermonter. That...was never part of our culture when I was growing up here? Like...why? AND I don't much like country music.🤷‍♀️ Trying to create a whole identity around being white hasn't done us any good at all.

I was was finishing a journalism degree at American University in DC from 00-02. I interned on K St., I met Daniel Ellsberg, I did the (selective) WaPo semester... My career took me elsewhere, but this trajectory has broken my heart into a thousand pieces I seem to step on every. single. day.

Today, I see angry young men online LARPing as Catholics, often for the aesthetic. They celebrate strength and hate the weak. The use slurs against the disabled and fantasize about enacting Crusader violence against their enemies. I wish the Pope would speak directly on this.

The Pope reminds me of a version of Catholicism I knew growing up as a young man attending anti-war and anti-death penalty protests, where I met elderly Catholics who shared their version of faith with me. I learned that Catholicism was about love and mercy for the weak, the condemned, and the poor.

I hope all the middle-aged women whose lives have been vastly improved by an ADHD diagnosis understand that we’re on the list after trans and autistic people. RFK Jr thinks we should be sent to camps instead of taking a daily medication to bring our dopamine pathways up to a normal level.

But...watching the adults in my family support and advocate for my cousin taught me a lot. Watching her classmates accept her taught me, too. I expect more from people because of that experience; now that 3/4 of my own small family is disabled, I am regularly disappointed in others.

Jen Gingras Harper @jengingras.bsky.social · 26/09/2026
Actually, this is true for my family. My cousins and I were raised in a pack, basically, and one of us had Down Syndrome (we lost her in 2024). Our rules changed to help and protect her. The way my family accepted and arranged itself around disability then didn't prepare me for our culture.

I don't ask for outdoor seating to be difficult. It's the only way our family can participate because of my disability. To deny me that option is a choice. Seriously, I would love to be able to say yes to things the way I used to. It'd make my life a lot easier.🙄

Yeah. My dad is still trying to demand that I eat in restaurants. Long Covid (a) destroyed my gut and makes restaurant food impossible/painful, and (b) keeps me masked indoors anyway. I may seem "better" because I'm stable, but keeping me from getting that sick again is critical.

Thanks for posting this. My tiny state is still at <0.9%, fortunately. ...but I still won't eat indoors at a restaurant, a fact that may have just estranged me from my remaining parent once again. He see it as a "choice." Outdoor seating was an option, so the choice was his. 🤷‍♀️
