📘 Cawley et al. argue there are significant gaps & inconsistencies in the national curriculum guidance on the teaching of #spelling, which in turn leads to a lack of teacher confidence in spelling tuition and non-optimal teaching strategies. 🔗 doi.org/10.1080/0013... @jelliclecat.bsky.social
The background image is ‘SPELLING’ written using cubes on an orange background. This is overlaid with the ‘Educational Review’ journal title at the top. I don't think that increased spending is resulting in more support for individual children with SEND though is it? Its just more spending because there are more children classified as SEND?

I was thinking specifically about children with neurodevelopmental difficulties rather than discipline issues but I appreciate it is a difficult line to tread. Not trying to blame schools, I was just thinking that it is easier to put in place behavioural adjustments than different teaching.

Julia Carroll @jelliclecat.bsky.social · 15/05/2025
In my experience the emotional/behavioural stuff can often be addressed relatively straightforwardly if schools are willing to be responsive and flexible. It does take staff time though, so is expensive (hence why seeking EHCP is on the rise).

Julia Carroll @jelliclecat.bsky.social · 15/05/2025
Yes I agree, to an extent. Parents need to know that getting a diagnosis is not a magic bullet and that schools put a lot of things in place to support different needs without diagnosis. However in practice, particularly in secondary, support is more consistent when there is a diagnosis linked to it
