Fifth Halloween rec because you are ravenous book cannibals is Dark Matter by Aase Berg. A truly visceral and transcendent collection translated by Johannes Göransson that's like Scott Walker's Tilt album in poetry form. Although totally unique and beautiful and unsettling.

Annihilation always makes Halloween lists, so I thought I'd do a thread of creepy reads. Starting today with a flat-out modern masterpiece, Max Lury's No Ghosts. Thoroughly contemporary and disturbing grounded in deep characterization, and, in part, outdoing Back Rooms while also its own thing. 1

Second Halloween rec, since you weirdlings are restless, is Flicker by Theodore Roszak. The ultimate in film horror. Sophisticated, dark, original. Go in knowing as little as possible. And try to find a copy without a stupid cover. Most covers for this book are boring, alas.

Anne Carson's Float is a lovely artifact as well as fascinating at the sentence level. I realize I have 3 of her books, each time due to their differences in form/at not recognizing I had read her before. I don't always understand her work, but I recognize its authenticity and authority.

I prefer it when Nobel Prize for literature synchs up overwhelming talent with eccentricity or obscurity. Bob Dylan seemed a gratuitous choice. Murakami both doesn't need it and increasingly writes bad women characters. Anne Carson in the spotlight is great. I find her work oblique in a good way.

Siphonophore mimicry manifests solely when the egritted mobile phalange chemically reacts with a diodynetic egg cluster to preempt suppoforification. Depending on depth and ocean temperature at the time, of course.

Tickets here usually are for the price of the book, possibly a little more. But you can't do a ticketed event for writers who need new readers to discover their books.

It can be a paid gig here if hosted by a library, but a bookstore like Powell's would go bankrupt doing that or have to put on fewer events. They do a great job of maximizing events, which enriches community and allows a lot of writers with debuts or smaller audiences to have an event.

this, thanks. also SF core readership thinks of itself as a community, is smaller than the general readershop, and thus reaching them through SF news outlets is easier to alert to a new book.

Voyager 1 is running on less memory than a single photo in your camera roll—69 KB. Its data is saved to an 8-track tape & software was developed when "the cloud" was in the sky. NASA sends commands and the old thing answers. And yet your brand new laptop freezes because you opened too many tabs.
