The best encapsulation of an academic’s many small failures is the shocking amount of things we plan to get done in the airport and then, of course, on the plane. So much will be done! And then we land, having opened one PowerPoint file, watched a movie, and fixed the internet connection 27 times.

A must read story that offers a terrifying window into the world of contemporary far right and pro-MAGA paramilitaries. The friendly ties between these aspiring terrorists and law enforcement is especially concerning. Not surprising to folks familiar with the history of the far right, but still bad.

Education friends: any good work on how teachers are handling Chat GPT/AI for writing assignments in high school and colleges? I found best practices and think pieces, but what about actual scholarship on what teachers are doing, how students narrate choices, how much cheating is alleged/found, etc?

It is wild how contemporary these 1890s academic freedom cases seem.
An 1897 political cartoon titled How to Build Up a University, which shows Brown University seeking a "young man of submissive disposition as president. A reasonable amount of scholarship will not be a disqualification but the chief requisite will be an obsequious and ingratiating behavior toward millionaires and the ability to RAKE IN THE DOLLARS."

I'm working on a few different papers about citizenship, and I keep coming back to an assumption I can't shake that if we're concerned about a group of people, we have to have real, ongoing human interactions with them. An effective altruist saving the world while sequestrated from it feels wrong.

I've been researching the idea of Unconditional Universal Basic Income since 2013. Here's a collection of findings I've compiled from various UBI experiments and studies of cash transfer programs around the world. This will be a VERY LONG and ongoing thread focused entirely on empirical evidence. 🧵
OBSERVED EFFECTS OF UBI

No significant reduction in labor supply (38 studies meta-analysis)

Increased self-employment (301%) and part-time employment (17%)

Slight decrease in alcohol and tobacco use (31 studies meta-analysis)

New mothers extend their maternity leaves

Birth weights improve due to better maternal nutrition

Graduation rates and educational outcomes improve

Hospitalization rates decline (8.5%)

Crime goes down (15%–42%) especially illegal hunting (95%)

Domestic violence decreases (30%–51%)

Trust increases (13% in politicians | 6% in other people)

Home ownership rates increase (17%–26%)

Food security increases as does consumption of fresh fruits and vegetables

Improved cognitive functioning (43%) and personality traits (31%)

Savings go up, debts go down

Holy fuck, Whole Foods union just dropped. 300 grocery store workers for Whole Foods in Philly are unionizing with UFCW local 1776. As far as I can tell, this is the first organizing effort at a whole foods *store,* ever.
Pictured is a filing from the National Labor Relations Board website showing a petition for certification of a labor organization as the representative of a collective bargaining unit. The employer is Whole Foods Market located in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. There are 300 employees in the proposed bargaining unit made up of All full time and regular part time employees including team members, team trainers, order writers, non-management supervisors, and store scanning specialists that are employed by the employer at its 2101 Pennsylvania Avenue, Philadelphia, PA facility. EXCLUDED: All other employees including store team leads, associate team leads, store trainers, team leaders, assistant team leaders, office, clerical, confidential employees, security guards, managers and supervisors as defined by the Act.
