Excited to share our new preprint "A cross-tissue splicing signature as a quantitative biomarker for ReNU syndrome" tinyurl.com/RENUsig Led by super⭐ duo @ruebenadawes.bsky.social @alexblakes.bsky.social We show that just 6 alternative 5'splice site events perfectly predict ReNU syndrome 🧬 🧵 1/4
A panel of 4 plots.
Top left: a bar plot of LASSO coefficients for the six 5' splice site events chosen by the model.
Top right: Box plots showing the LASSO predicted probability of case status for controls compared to ReNU cases across whole-blood and lymphocyte cohorts, for training and test samples. P(case) for ReNU samples are significantly greater than controls.
Bottom left: schematics of the six alternative 5' splice site events.
Bottom right: Box plots showing significant changes in expression for two of the implicated genes, STX16 and RPS15A.

The short answer is I live in Finland. More concretely: to speak Finnish with my kids when they feel like it (they are bilingual), to deal with the school system and certain admin, and to make closer friends. I'm stuck because I'm afraid of messing up. (I guess I have diagnosed myself 😆)

I would love to hear about your experience in any level of detail you choose to share! I have been stuck at "not good enough" Finnish for a few years now... :(

Read a bit of @emilyrcwilson.bsky.social’s Odyssey to my 8-year old tonight (book 10, Aeolus and Circe are more exciting than the suitors). And, WOW, is this meant to be read aloud. The verse just cooks in a way you can’t replicate inside your head.

I like to keep Claude on its toes by mixing wildly different topics in the same chat. For example, this reply came in a chat titled, "Montreal steakhouses": "The mixing parameter α is worth tuning jointly with λ, though results are often fairly flat across α in a moderate range like 0.3 to 0.7."

God that's fucking grim. Imagine laboring over a grant submission and then finding out no human ever even read it. I have some sympathy for funding agencies trying to cope with a wave of AI generated submissions, but this does not seem like a good sign.

Pirates! on my friend’s Mac. We had a NES before that, and I liked playing it, but it always felt more like my (older) brother’s thing. Strategy plus the thrill of leaping across the gunwale for hand to hand combat. Also the beginning of a lifelong enjoyment of Sid Meier’s oeuvre

I have no expectation about whether the cover letter sounds like English as a first language. I’m an immigrant and am acutely aware of how it feels to not speak the local language fluently! I just want to hear in simple sentences what is scientifically interesting!

Tempted to use AI to write your cover letter or email to a potential employer? RESIST! It is simultaneously obvious, insulting, and renders you totally undifferentiated from the other 80 people being considered t the same time. There has never been a better time to write concisely in your own voice!
