New research, published in The Lancet Psychiatry, has investigated the risk of death of people with severe mental illness (SMI) during the COVID-19 pandemic and the possible impact of prioritising this group for vaccination. www.maudsleybrc.nihr.ac.uk/news/vaccina...
Vaccination reduced but did not eliminate mortality inequalities for people with severe mental illness

“Prioritising people with severe mental illness for vaccination was an important and effective policy, but more needs to be done to address the wider factors that contribute to poorer health and premature mortality
 in this population.”

CRIS research linking mental health records with census data, led by Professor @jdasmunshi.bsky.social has shown that those with severe mental illness are more likely to have poor health and be unemployed. These outcomes are strongly linked to living alone: www.maudsleybrc.nihr.ac.uk/posts/2024/d...
Professor Jay Das-Munshi, Professor of Social & Psychiatric Epidemiology at King’s IoPPN said:
“Our study indicates that people with severe
mental health conditions experience high levels of disability, report poorer health and high levels of unemployment, compared to those without these conditions. We must do more to support people with these conditions to ultimately live better lives.”
