Saw a great talk about handcrafted code by @charity.wtf at #ldx3ny. This talk needs trigger warnings! If you're someone like me who prefers to write code by hand, this talk will force you to consider some uncomfortable questions about what you're really trying to build and why.

4 panel comic

Panel 1:
A post from “kavishj9611” that reads:

“All the people who are anti-Al or want to slow Al progress, I have one question:
If Al disappeared tomorrow, could you still get through an entire workday without ChatGPT, Claude, or any other
Al tool?
Imagine Al was suddenly banned.
Would you actually be willing to give it up?”

Panel 2:
And Orange Guy and a Pink Guy are standing in a room that has two pipes in it. Both pipes are pumping raw sewage into the room. The characters are waist deep in it.
Orange Guy says smugly “Ok Mr “I don’t want to be in a room that’s filling up with raw sewage” let me ask you this”

Panel 3:
The sewage has reached their chests. Pink Guy is gagging. Orange Guy smugly continues “If all this sewage disappeared right now, could you get through the day without it?”

Panel 4:
The sewage is almost up to their eyeballs. Orange Guys says “Look at that shit floating past your face. Are you willing to give that up?”

Here’s a new dig for you to learn: A statement similar to Hanlon's razor appears in Robert A. Heinlein's 1941 novella "Logic of Empire". The character Doc in the story describes the "devil theory" fallacy, explaining, "You have attributed conditions to villainy that simply result from stupidity."

By far the funniest moment in Homer’s Odyssey is when Circe says, “Shall we have sex?” and Odysseus says, “You just turned all my men into pigs. You have the GALL to think I would sleep with you? Of course I will. Absolutely. But don’t do any weird spells”
photograph of the relevant passage in Fitzgerald's translation of the Odyssey ("I make no bed of love with you upon it. Or swear me first a great oath, if I do, you'll work no more enchantment to my harm.")

Many people have recommended 'A Libertarian Walks Into a Bear' by Matthew Hongoltz-Hetling, which is an outstanding read for many reasons. I also think the author had an unreasonable amount of fun writing this, exemplified by this passage about Professor Butt and his study of colonialism. Enjoy.
Screenshot of an excerpt from the book 'A Libertarian Walks Into a Bear', with several passages highlighted that show the author's repeated double entrende with the use of the word 'Butt'.

It's been long accepted that, as Messrs. Bell, Biv & DeVoe put forth, one should "Never trust a big butt and a smile." But it raises new questions: Is a joyless person with a sizable derriere inherently less poisonous? Does a grinning person with a normal-to-small tuchus pose a scaled-down threat?

AI can tell you how a word is spelled. But the work these kids do to solve those words—developing study tactics, identifying linguistic patterns, honing their ability to perform under pressure—is something a computer can’t do for you. The Bee is a reminder of what the human brain is capable of.
