“Quaver, Hook & Worm” was accepted by jury to the Canadian Society of Painters in Watercolour 100th Annual Open Water Exhibition. I’m pleased 🤗 because people don’t believe me when I say that this is what watercolour can do. And here we are. 18 x 24” watercolour on clay (Aquabord). Available.

This is an image of a watercolour painting of a young woman with red hair and a white dress and two bluebirds. She is pictured from the shoulders up. One blue bird is sitting on one shoulder and tweeting a Golden quaver into her ear. The other bluebird is hovering mid flight in the air above her other ear and pulling a pink worm out of that ear. The woman’s expression is amused. It’s as if the pulling of the worm out her ear is tickling her. This is a watercolour painting in a very realistic style. The text above the painting reads “Congratulations! Your painting, submission, entitled, “Quaver, Hook & Worm” has been accepted by jury into the 100th OPEN WATER / L’EAU CLAIRE“ an international jury exhibition in water media exhibition dates September 11 - October 2, 2025 Teichert Gallery, Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada.

Humbled to have my watercolour painting, “Beside Himself” selected as a Top Ten Finalist in this juried art exhibition of 105 amazing artworks. Thanks to the esteemed judges Celine Cardineau, Fabian Jean and Carlos Salamanca for their thoughtful consideration, and to Artists in Montreal. So happy!

Three people are posed in front of two paintings hanging on the wall behind them. The painting on top is titled “Beside Himself“ and shows a young man standing beside a transparent version of himself. This painting has been recognized as a top 10 finalist in the Artists in Montreal juried exhibition. Two of the three judges are posed on either side of me, JC Little. They are Celine Cardineau and renowned artist Fabian Jean.

On the right, coming out of her other ear is a long pink worm that is being stretched off screen (an earworm). Part 1. Value study/design for my next painting, “The Poet”. It will be watercolour (and possibly also gold leaf 🤔) on 22 x 30” Aquabord. Ref model is Jean-Guy 💎. #watercolor #painting #magicalrealism #butterflies #poetry #art #artist #blueskyart

This is a rough sketch of my next painting. The concept is fairly straightforward: a young man is pictured from the waist up and he has a big hole in his torso. We can see right through the hole to the other side. Inside the hole are some butterflies flying around. One of his arms is held up in a gesture. His face is contemplative and he is blowing out of breath, and along this breath is a butterfly. It is as if he is blowing out the butterfly from inside of him. Since this is just a sketch to determine the darks and lights, the drawing is very rough. But I will be rendering it in watercolour as a painting.

This is a work in progress image of my watercolour painting. It shows a young woman head and shoulders with two birds, one is on her shoulder, and the other is inflate near the other side of her head. She has a giggling expression on her face, the bird that is in flight is pulling a worm out of her ear, whilst the other bird perched on her shoulder is singing a musical note into her other ear. Because this is a working progress, it is not finished. The background is green, and the face only has a few layers of skin tones painted in.

Here are the high rez scans of my painting. “MOMENTUM” 28 x 40” pure watercolour 24k gold leaf, available. Thank you to my model, the amazing Tracey Steer 💎 I love you!

This is my watercolour painting, Momentum. A Black woman rests comfortably on a sofa, suspended in outer space. She is communing with a Monarch butterfly on her knee and contemplating the transatlantic weather systems on Earth. The planet is supported like a jewel by the stylized palisades of her crown, in gold leaf. She is wearing a white satin dress, and the sofa is decked out in sumptuous fabrics and cushions. It is richly upholstered and embroidered with stars, a nod to the sitters celestial status.

This is a close-up of my watercolour painting, Momentum. We can see a Black woman’s hand resting on her knee. She is wearing a flowing white satin dress and the folds of fabric go over her legs. Resting on her knee is a monarch butterfly. The back of the sofa has carved wood in a floral motif and richly embroidered turquoise and gold upholstery.

This is a close-up of my watercolour painting, Momentum. Here we can see the left side of the sofa. The backdrop behind it is outer space with a few stars showing. There is beautiful, brocade fabric with fringe draped over the edge of the sofa. The sofa has carved wood with deep turquoise and gold upholstery. There are sumptuous cushions on the edge of the sofa, and we can see a part of the woman’s body and arm as she sits comfortably. She is wearing a white satin gown in contrast with the deep brown of her skin.

This is a 3 x 4“ colour study from my work sketchbook. In this watercolour image, which is very loosely painted, there is a young woman seen head and shoulders. On the left shoulder is perched a blue bird, which is singing into her ear. Flying in the air next to her other ear is another bluebird. This bird is pulling a pink worm out of the woman’s ear. The woman is giggling because it tickles! In this colour study, the background is painted in green tones.

Rough pencil, drawing of a young woman, head and shoulders. Her face has an expression as if she is giggling to herself. On her shoulder on the left, there is a small bird tweeting, a musical note into her ear. In the air on the right side of her head, there is another bird hovering with its wings extended in a flapping motion. This airborne bird is pulling an earthworm out of the young woman’s ear. I find this to be pretty hilarious.

“The Icebreaker” won 1st prize - The Judges Choice Award for the Artists in Montreal Winter Art Show 2025 🎨. Thank you to the judges, and to AiM for supporting artists in Montreal 💕 😊 I am so pleased. “The Icebreaker” 16 x 20” pure watercolour on Aquabord 💎 - sold. Prints available.

This is a watercolour painting I created, with a lot of pale blue and pink colours showing a wintry and cold landscape. There is a crack in the ice coming from the left, and a child in a yellow raincoat is riding a bright red umbrella across this ice, dragging her hand along the crack, as if she is opening the ice herself. With a mitten hand trailing, a child travelling across the arctic ice by umbrella, effortless opens the glacier surface to reveal mysterious waters; a poetic daydream. In an escape to the most distant and inhospitable place one can think of, one find serenity, calm, and control over one’s own destiny.

JC Little here, this is a tiny portrait close-up of my son‘s face. One hand is covering his mouth as he is giggling. The left side of his face is completely opaque and the right side of his face is transparent. The background is green and yellow with a horizontal ribbon of cherries about mid-level. On the transparent side of his face, we can see the background through it. I really like the playfulness of the fact that he is covering his mouth to hide that he is giggling, and yet we can see right through him.

Hi there, JC Little here. This image is the colour study phase of my next painting. It shows a page from my work sketchbook. On the left side are two colour studies for my new painting, and on the right side are colour swatches of different pigments that I am testing. On the left side the two images that show colour studies for the painting have two different background colors. The top one has a green background and the bottom one has a blue background. Here is a description of the concept of the painting: The image is a horizontal rectangle, and shows a young man on the left and a replica of him on the right. He is posed so that we see him from the waist up. The background is a gradient from yellow to pale blue from the bottom to the top. The young man is wearing a white sweatshirt. Behind him there is a decorative strip of wallpaper about mid-level. This decorative strip shows a repeat motif of a standing crow with some berries and leaves. The figure on the left is displayed with full opacity. He is looking with just his eyes at the figure on the right. The figure on the right is a replica of the one on the left, but he is displayed with 50% Transparency. We can see right through him. Also, he is looking directly at us. Where the wallpaper motif of crows goes behind him, we can see through it because he is transparent, the crows are flying up in a chaotic manner. Where we can see through the young man on the right, the horizontal lines of the wallpaper strip, top and bottom, are erratically displayed - similar to a stressed out heart rate on a medical heart rate monitor. This young man is evidently going through some big feelings inside himself. He is beside himself, and that is the name of the artwork. This is only a work in progress, it is part of the design phase.

A tiny portrait of the artist Tracey Steer, my friend, model and muse. Thanks for posing for me and for all your valuable input on *that* painting 🎨💎. AND for letting me tag you all those times this past year 😅💕 “Hoops” 4 x 4” portrait, pure watercolour and 24k gold leaf on Aquabord, gifted. #art

This is my 4 x 4” watercolour painting of a woman’s face and shoulders: this woman is Montreal-based artist, Tracey Steer. She is looking directly at us and smiling, showing her teeth. She has a smooth, bald head, with just a shadow of hair showing. Her skin is a deep warm brown with gold highlights, and vermilion rosiness. On her shoulders, you can see that she is wearing a deep green satin dress. In her ears are gold hoops, and these are gilded with gold leaf. The background is a mixture of granulating pigments which show a lot of texture in the background, a deep blue green color. Her expression is quite playful!

My left hand is holding up a framed painting of a woman’s face. It is a small frame. About 6 x 6“ and it fits in my left hand. The frame is gold and the portrait within it is a 4 x 4” watercolour of a bald black woman, smiling at us. In the background behind the frame that I’m holding up, is the painting that I painted using this woman as my model. Her name is Tracey Steer, and she is also an artist. In the painting in the background, which is out of focus in this image, you can see that the black woman is sitting on a sofa in a white dress, with the planet earth, floating in the air above her, held by fronds of a golden crown emanating from her bald head. The background is deep space with stars in the sky, giving the whole thing a galactic feel.

Part 39. Butterflies carry much symbolism in art and culture: growth, transformation and freedom. In particular, the Monarch, known for its yearly migration across North America from Canada, the US and Mexico: resilience, determination and endurance 💪🏾. Work-in-progress 30 x 40” pure watercolour.

This is a close-up detail of my painting in watercolor. The portion that we see here is of a monarch butterfly resting on a woman’s knee next to her hand. The fabric draped across the knee is creamy white satin. The woman’s hand is resting in a relaxed manner. The butterfly with its orange tones and black trim stands out against the deep turquoise pattern of the sofa fabric behind it.

This is a work in progress image of my latest painting in watercolor. The image shows a woman seated on a sofa in outer space as she imagines planet earth held by fronds of a crown behind her head. She is wearing a creamy white satin dress and has brown skin. There are fabrics draped across the sofa. There is a monarch butterfly resting on the woman’s knee next to her hand. As I said, this is a work in progress, I still have to gold leaf the front of the crown. They are currently painted in an undercoat of deep orange.
